Migori County Reports Suspected Mpox Case Amid Heightened Health Surveillance

Migori County, located in the southwestern part of Kenya and bordering Tanzania, has reported a suspected case of Mpox, a viral disease that has raised significant health concerns globally. This announcement was made by Mabel Chanzu, the Chief Officer for Health Services in Migori County, during the launch of several critical health units at the Migori County Referral Hospital. The suspected case is yet to be confirmed, but the county’s health authorities have already taken substantial steps to prevent a potential outbreak.

Heightened Surveillance and Screening Efforts

In response to the suspected Mpox case, Migori County has intensified its surveillance efforts, particularly at the border points of Isebania and Muhuru, which are known for their high traffic between Kenya and Tanzania. These border points are considered critical due to their porous nature, which poses challenges to effective screening and the potential entry of infectious diseases from neighboring regions.

Chief Officer Chanzu revealed that approximately 1,000 individuals have already been screened at these border points as part of the county’s proactive measures. Additionally, the Migori County Referral Hospital has implemented enhanced screening services to bolster surveillance efforts. These initiatives are aimed at early detection and prevention, ensuring that any suspected cases of Mpox are quickly identified and contained.

Public Health Advisory and Preventive Measures

Given the suspected Mpox case and the county’s proximity to Tanzania, where cross-border movement is frequent, Chanzu urged the residents of Migori County to adopt preventive measures similar to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic. These measures include maintaining high levels of hygiene, regular handwashing, and avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms of infectious diseases. The call for heightened vigilance is crucial as Mpox can spread through close physical contact, respiratory droplets, and contaminated surfaces.

The health department’s advisory is timely, considering that Kenya declared an Mpox outbreak on July 31, following the confirmation of a case in Taita-Taveta County. Since the declaration, the Ministry of Health has reported 29 suspected cases across the country, with 23 of those testing positive. The situation in Migori is particularly sensitive due to its geographical location, which increases the risk of disease transmission from Tanzania, where health screening may not be as rigorous.

Enhancing Healthcare Capacity in Migori County

The suspected Mpox case was announced during a significant event for Migori County’s healthcare sector—the launch of the Causality Unit, Cancer Care Unit, and Gastroenterology Unit at the Migori County Referral Hospital. These new units represent a considerable investment in the county’s healthcare infrastructure, aimed at improving the quality of medical services available to the local population.

Chanzu highlighted that the newly established Causality Department, along with the emergency medical care plan developed in collaboration with the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation, will play a pivotal role in strengthening the county’s emergency health response systems. This is especially important in the context of emerging health threats like Mpox, where rapid response and adequate medical facilities are crucial to preventing widespread outbreaks.

Collaborations and Future Plans

Emily Nyagaki, the Programmes Director of the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation, also attended the launch and expressed her organization’s commitment to supporting Migori County’s healthcare initiatives. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between the county government and health organizations in providing pre-hospital services and enhancing the overall health system’s resilience.

Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, who officiated the event, reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the county’s healthcare infrastructure. He outlined plans to further equip the Migori County Referral Hospital, aiming to elevate it to a Level Five facility. This upgrade would significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to handle more complex medical cases and provide specialized care to the county’s residents.
