Athletics Kenya Masters Team Flagged Off for World Championships

Athletics Kenya (AK) has officially flagged off its Masters Team for the 25th World Masters Athletics Championships, set to take place from August 13 to 25 in Sweden. The event, a major highlight in the athletics calendar, will see a delegation of 25 athletes and eight officials representing Kenya on the global stage.

The flagging-off ceremony, held at Talanta Hela Plaza in Nairobi, was a moment of great anticipation and pride for the team. Stephen Olemarai, Chairman of the Masters Team Kenya, expressed a sense of readiness and optimism for the upcoming championship. “The team is ready for the competition and we are optimistic about performing well,” Olemarai stated. His confidence stems from the extensive preparations that the athletes have undergone, which he believes will translate into strong performances and potentially, medals for Kenya.

Olemarai’s sentiments were echoed by Paul Mutwii, Vice President of Athletics Kenya, who highlighted the significance of the Masters group within the athletics community. “The Masters group is a vital part of the AK fraternity. Their outstanding performances have helped establish Kenya’s reputation globally,” Mutwii remarked. He also emphasized that the Masters athletes are given the same opportunities as other athletes, underscoring the support and recognition they receive from the organization. Mutwii’s praise reflects the integral role the Masters athletes play in enhancing Kenya’s stature in international athletics.

Achoki conveyed the ministry’s appreciation for the team and their role in the sports ecosystem. “The state department and ministry have funded your participation because you are integral to our sports ecosystem. We want you to continue mentoring young athletes and investing wisely,” Achoki said. He also expressed hope that the team would secure numerous medals, thereby making Kenya proud.

The Masters Championships will feature a wide array of events across various age categories, showcasing the talents and endurance of athletes who continue to compete at a high level beyond their prime years. Kenya’s participation in this championship highlights the country’s dedication to fostering athletic talent across all age groups, from the young rising stars to seasoned competitors.
