Kharkiv, one of Ukraine’s largest and most important industrial cities, was again the target of Russian military aggression on Sunday when a guided bomb struck a high-rise residential building, injuring at least 28 civilians, including three children. The city, which is located near the Russian border, has been a frequent target in Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, and this latest attack underscores the continuing peril faced by its residents.
A Devastating Strike in the Early Hours
According to Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov, the bomb struck a multi-story residential building, setting it ablaze. “The hit caused a fire in a residential high-rise building,” Syniehubov confirmed through a statement on the Telegram messenger app. Firefighters and emergency response teams rushed to the scene to rescue those trapped inside and to extinguish the flames.
Reports from the scene describe a chaotic aftermath. Families, many of whom were still inside their apartments when the bomb hit, scrambled to safety as smoke and flames engulfed the building. Several residents sustained injuries from falling debris, while others were hurt in their attempts to escape through the stairwells.
Three children were among the injured, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of Russia’s attacks on civilian infrastructure in the region. Medical personnel have stated that the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Local hospitals have been struggling to keep up with the influx of injured civilians as attacks on the city have intensified in recent months.

Kharkiv, a city of nearly 1.5 million people before the war, has been a focal point in Russia’s campaign to assert control over eastern Ukraine. Situated just 30 kilometers from the Russian border, it remains vulnerable to airstrikes, missile attacks, and drone incursions. Since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, Kharkiv has endured relentless bombardment. This latest attack exacerbates the already dire humanitarian situation in the city. Humanitarian organizations operating in Kharkiv have struggled to provide food, medical aid, and shelter to the displaced and injured civilians. Many citizens have been forced to live in underground shelters for months, fearing the next bomb strike could be imminent.
While Ukrainian officials continue to appeal for international assistance and support, they have also urged the global community to increase pressure on Russia to halt its indiscriminate attacks on civilian populations. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has repeatedly accused Russia of committing war crimes in Kharkiv, citing the continuous targeting of non-military infrastructure and residential buildings.

Despite the ongoing assault, Kharkiv has remained resilient. Ukrainian defense forces, bolstered by international military aid, have successfully repelled several major Russian offensives in the region. The citizens of Kharkiv, too, have shown incredible resolve, continuing to work, attend school, and rebuild amidst the destruction. However, the psychological toll of the war has been immense.
Governor Syniehubov called for calm but reminded residents of the importance of staying vigilant. He urged people to continue using air raid shelters and to follow all security protocols as the threat of further attacks remains high.
