Kenya has lost a distinguished legal mind and women’s rights advocate with the passing of Senior Counsel Judy Thongori. Thongori died on Tuesday evening in India, where she had been flown for emergency medical treatment. Her demise was confirmed by the Senior Counsel Bar (SCB), of which she was a highly esteemed member.
“It is with a heavy heart that I relay to all of us the sad news of the passing on of our dear sister SC Judy Thongori. She was taken ill recently and flown to India for emergency treatment. Sadly, due to complications, she passed on,” read the SCB statement.
A trailblazer in family law, Thongori was celebrated for her tireless advocacy for justice and gender equality. Her dedication to empowering women and championing their participation in governance earned her a place in the Roll of Honour of the Law Society of Kenya in 2013, the first woman to receive such recognition.
Thongori’s landmark achievements include winning a case against the government for failing to fulfill the constitutional requirement of 30% women’s representation. She played a pivotal role in drafting the Marriage Bill and organizing training sessions to sensitize law enforcement on women’s rights.
The Senior Counsel Bar paid tribute to her unwavering dedication, stating, “Judy was a pillar in family law practice. She was always available to assist and selflessly served the legal community.”
Thongori’s legal career began at the Attorney General’s office before she transitioned to private practice. She later founded Judy Thongori & Company Associates, where she offered legal services, consultancy, and independent expertise.
Beyond her legal contributions, Thongori served as chairperson of the Center for Rights, Education, and Awareness and as deputy director at the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Kenya).
Her passing is a profound loss to Kenya’s legal and advocacy circles. The SCB extended condolences to her husband, John, also a lawyer, and their family.
As Kenya mourns, Thongori’s legacy remains an enduring inspiration in the fight for justice and equality.
