The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a concerning statistic on Earth’s average temperature, indicating a heightened risk of surpassing the 1.5°C (34.7°F) threshold in the coming years. The WMO warns that there is now an 80% probability that Earth’s average temperature could briefly exceed 1.5°C between now and 2028.
This threshold is significant as it represents the limit of warming that countries committed to staying below under the Paris Agreement of 2015. The probability of exceeding this limit has increased drastically from near 0% at the time of the agreement to the current 80% likelihood. This trend underscores the urgency for enhanced global efforts to mitigate climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to safeguard the planet’s future climate stability.
