Respected High Court Judge David Majanja Passes Away, Leaving a Legacy of Legal Excellence

The legal fraternity in Kenya is mourning the loss of High Court Judge David Majanja, a respected figure whose contributions to jurisprudence and institution-building have left an enduring legacy. Judge Majanja passed away while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital late Wednesday, leaving behind a profound sense of sorrow among his colleagues, friends, and the entire judiciary community.

Chief Justice Martha Koome expressed deep condolences, highlighting Majanja’s pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s legal landscape since his appointment as a High Court Judge in 2011. His career spanned various significant roles across several courts, including Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, and Kisii High Courts, as well as at the Commercial and Tax Divisions and the Civil Division of the Milimani High Court.

Educationally, Judge Majanja held a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in International Trade and Investment Law from the University of Pretoria, cementing his expertise in legal matters crucial to Kenya’s development and governance. His journey in law began with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi, followed by admission to the Bar in 1998 after completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.

Before his judicial career, Judge Majanja practiced law specializing in Civil and Commercial Law and was notably involved in public interest litigation, including serving as Assisting Counsel for the Commission of Inquiry into Post Election Violence (Waki Commission). His dedication to justice continued through his tenure as a Commissioner at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), where he chaired the Administration of Justice Committee and contributed significantly to the Judiciary Rules Committee.

Throughout his career, Justice Majanja demonstrated a commitment to fairness and the rule of law, earning the respect and admiration of peers and the public alike. His leadership as the Presiding Judge at various courts and his role in the Judiciary Working Committee on Election Preparations (JWCEP) underscored his influence in ensuring judicial integrity and efficiency.
