Rosatom Leads Discussion on Green Energy at African Energy Week 2024

South Africa, Rosatom, the Russian state corporation specializing in nuclear energy, took center stage in discussions around Africa’s sustainable energy future. The event, which ran from November 5 to 8, brought together key stakeholders in the energy sector, including government officials, private companies, and industry experts. The panel discussion led by Rosatom, titled “From Vision to Action: Africa’s Sustainable Energy Transition through Green Innovation,” highlighted the corporation’s commitment to supporting Africa’s transition to a greener, more sustainable energy future.

Rosatom has long been a partner to African nations in the pursuit of energy security and socio-economic development, and this session underscored the importance of nuclear technology in shaping Africa’s energy landscape. The session explored the delicate balance between energy security, economic growth, and the global drive to reduce carbon emissions. In particular, the focus was on how innovative solutions such as nuclear and renewable energy can help meet Africa’s increasing energy demands while supporting climate goals.

Prominent speakers at the panel included Loyiso Tyabashe, CEO of the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa), Beke Nxumalo, Group Executive for Generation at Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, and Mohammed Saad Dwiddar, Project Manager of Egypt’s El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Project. They were joined by Vladimir Aptekarev, Deputy General Director for Shipbuilding, Floating Energy, and Marine Engineering at Rosatom, and Evgenii Liapunov, Deputy Director General – Chief Engineer at PJSC “Rosseti.” The panelists discussed the growing role of nuclear power in Africa’s energy mix, stressing that the continent needs diversified energy sources to ensure stable, sustainable, and clean energy for future generations.

Ryan Collyer, CEO of Rosatom Central and Southern Africa, highlighted Rosatom’s long-standing presence in Africa and the company’s confidence in nuclear energy as a key solution for sustainable development. “Our advanced low-carbon solutions are capable of providing reliable, stable, and clean energy, crucial for the development of African countries,” Collyer said. Rosatom’s contributions go beyond just providing technology; the company is actively involved in helping African nations develop their energy infrastructure and skills, ensuring that nuclear power can be safely integrated into their energy systems.

One of the main topics of the panel was the diversification of Africa’s energy mix. While renewable energy sources like solar power have made significant strides in recent years, the integration of nuclear energy is seen as a complementary solution to help provide a stable and continuous supply of energy. The speakers emphasized the importance of combining nuclear power with renewable sources, such as solar, to create a robust and flexible energy system. Additionally, the discussion covered the role of energy storage systems in addressing the intermittency of solar power and ensuring a reliable energy supply.

Mohammed Saad Dwiddar shared his insights from the ongoing development of the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt, which is set to become a model for nuclear power in the region. “As we watch this project come to fruition, we are witnessing the successful utilization of advanced energy technologies to build a sustainable future,” he said, underscoring the potential of nuclear power to play a key role in Africa’s energy transition.

As part of its participation in AEW 2024, Rosatom also hosted virtual tours of its key energy projects, including the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant and a floating nuclear power plant. These 360° virtual tours allowed attendees to explore these state-of-the-art facilities and learn about the technology that drives them, providing a deeper understanding of how nuclear energy can be integrated into various environments, including those with limited land availability.

The African Energy Week forum serves as a critical platform for discussing Africa’s energy future, bringing together stakeholders to explore innovative solutions for the continent’s energy challenges. With Rosatom’s extensive experience in nuclear technology and its leadership role in the global nuclear energy market, the company is well-positioned to help African nations meet their energy needs in a sustainable and low-carbon manner. As Africa’s energy demands continue to rise, nuclear energy, in conjunction with renewable sources, is expected to play a pivotal role in driving the continent’s energy transition and supporting its economic growth.
