Nairobi, on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, President William Ruto received the credentials of Russia’s newly appointed Ambassador to Kenya, Vsevolod Tkachenko. Tkachenko takes over from Dmitry Maksimychev, who concluded his tenure after serving as the Russian envoy since 2018.
Russian President Vladimir Putin selected Tkachenko for the role, recognizing his vast diplomatic experience spanning over four decades. This appointment underscores Russia’s intent to further bolster its relations with Kenya, a key African partner. Tkachenko is uniquely positioned to strengthen this partnership, being fluent in Swahili, a language widely spoken in Kenya and Tanzania.
A Legacy of Strong Bilateral Relations
Speaking at the credential presentation, Tkachenko highlighted the robust and historically significant ties between Kenya and Russia, which have grown since their establishment in 1963. Last year, the two nations celebrated six decades of diplomatic relations rooted in mutual trust and collaboration.
“Russia considers Kenya a prominent African power and an important political and economic partner,” Tkachenko stated. “The spirit of mutual commitment to constructive dialogue and collaboration has defined our relations at both bilateral and multilateral levels, including in the United Nations and other international forums.”
Tkachenko praised Kenya’s pivotal role in fostering peace and stability within Africa and beyond, emphasizing the importance of harnessing the significant potential in Russia-Kenya relations.
Focus on Strengthening Cooperation
As Tkachenko begins his term, he intends to prioritize fostering cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, tourism, and education. His objective is to not only nurture existing collaborations but also explore new opportunities that can benefit both nations.
“Intensifying our collaboration in areas of mutual interest is essential,” Tkachenko added, underscoring his commitment to expanding economic, cultural, and educational exchanges between Russia and Kenya.
A Distinguished Career in Diplomacy
Tkachenko brings extensive experience to his new role. Before his appointment as Ambassador to Kenya, he served as the Director of the African Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, a position he held since 2020. His diplomatic career began in East Africa in 1983, when he was posted to the Embassy of the USSR in Uganda.
Throughout his career, Tkachenko has demonstrated a deep understanding of African affairs. From 1991 to 1996, he served at the Russian Embassy in Zimbabwe, and from 2014 to 2019, he held the position of Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union.

Tkachenko’s arrival coincides with the appointment of Dr. Peter Mathuki as Kenya’s new Ambassador to Moscow. This reciprocal exchange of diplomats signals a renewed focus on deepening ties between the two nations.
