President William Ruto has thrown his weight behind Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship, declaring it a strategic move for Kenya, East Africa, and the African continent at large. Addressing the Piny Luo Cultural Festival on its third day at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, President Ruto affirmed that Odinga’s candidacy embodies the aspirations of a united and progressive Africa.
“This celebration reaffirms that our collective push as East Africa to present Raila Odinga as a candidate for the AUC chairmanship is the right course of action,” Ruto stated. “Odinga is not just a candidate for Kenya, but for the entire East African region.”
Ruto underscored that Odinga’s extensive political career and proven leadership make him the ideal candidate to steer the African Union (AU) into a new era of development and unity. He revealed that consultations with regional leaders, including Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and other East African heads of state, have cemented Odinga as the preferred candidate for the position.
“Raila Odinga has a proven track record as a visionary and unifying force,” Ruto emphasized.
Odinga’s campaign has been gaining momentum across Africa, with widespread support from East Africa and beyond. During a recent meeting of the AU Executive Council, East Africa secured the right to present a candidate for the AUC leadership, giving Odinga a significant boost in his bid.
The former Prime Minister’s platform focuses on strengthening Pan-African unity, driving sustainable development, and reinforcing the institutional frameworks of the African Union. His vision resonates with influential African leaders, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who have endorsed him as a unifying figure poised to tackle the continent’s most pressing challenges.
Odinga’s campaign also enjoys support from numerous East African heads of state who see his leadership as a beacon for regional and continental progress.
If successful, Odinga will succeed Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad, who has been at the helm of the AUC since 2017.
With the AUC chairmanship elections slated for February 2025, Odinga’s vigorous diplomatic efforts reflect his commitment to securing consensus across Africa. His leadership bid promises to amplify Kenya’s and East Africa’s influence on the global stage, presenting a united front for the continent’s advancement.
