President William Ruto has reiterated the government’s determination to roll out the nationwide livestock vaccination programme, set for January 2024, dismissing what he termed as propaganda by some political leaders opposing the initiative. Speaking at the annual Kimalel Goat Auction in Baringo County on Tuesday, President Ruto emphasized the programme’s significance in combating livestock diseases and enhancing the quality of livestock products for international markets.
“We are determined to vaccinate our livestock to improve product quality, enhance market access, and increase earnings for farmers,” he stated, adding that misinformation about the vaccination exercise would not derail its implementation.
The President explained that diseases such as foot-and-mouth and anthrax have been a barrier to the entry of Kenyan meat products into regional and global markets. By addressing these issues, the vaccination programme aims to position Kenya as a reliable exporter of livestock products.
Locally Produced Vaccines
To dispel safety concerns, President Ruto assured Kenyans that the vaccines to be used are locally produced by Kenyan scientists, ensuring quality and trust in the initiative. He also challenged critics of the programme to provide alternative solutions rather than propagate falsehoods.
“If it’s safe to vaccinate humans, how can vaccinating animals be dangerous? Leaders opposing this should stop misleading Kenyans with fake news,” he remarked.
The President called for unity and constructive engagement among leaders, urging them to prioritize the country’s development over divisive rhetoric.
A Focus on Peace and Prosperity
During the event, President Ruto lauded the collaborative efforts of leaders, security officers, and residents in restoring peace in the Kerio Valley, a region previously plagued by banditry and cattle rustling.
“The power of unity and teamwork has transformed this region. Let us set aside political differences and work together for peace and prosperity,” he urged.
In addition to promoting livestock vaccination, the President announced several development initiatives for Baringo County. These include a Ksh 50 million investment to establish a livestock training centre, the creation of a green energy-powered special economic zone, and the planning of a new university in the area.
Support from Leaders
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki echoed President Ruto’s sentiments, urging Kenyans to support the vaccination programme for the health of their livestock and better market access.
“Let us ignore propaganda and prioritize healthy animals that meet international standards,” said Prof. Kindiki.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa highlighted the economic benefits of the vaccination programme, noting its potential to boost the livestock trade significantly.
Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot criticized those opposing the initiative, accusing them of politicizing an issue they did not fully understand.
“Vaccination is an essential part of modern livestock management,” Cheruiyot said.
Governors Back the Programme
Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi and Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo pledged their full support for the programme, emphasizing that vaccination is a routine and vital practice for responsible livestock management.
“Even the goats we are selling today have been vaccinated. No one should lecture us on this matter,” said Governor Cheboi.
The annual Kimalel Goat Auction, a highlight in the region’s agricultural calendar, brought together leaders, government officials, and residents to celebrate Baringo County’s rich livestock heritage.
Among the notable attendees were Cabinet Secretaries Kipchumba Murkomen (Sports) and Andrew Karanja (Agriculture), alongside MPs and MCAs, who reiterated their commitment to improving livestock health and the livelihoods of farmers.
The Road Ahead
As the January rollout date for the vaccination programme approaches, the government remains steadfast in its resolve to ensure its success. By improving livestock health and positioning Kenyan products for the international market, the initiative promises to transform the livestock sector and deliver long-term benefits to farmers and the economy.
President Ruto’s call for unity and focus on shared goals underscores the government’s commitment to tackling challenges and driving development, despite resistance from detractors.
