President William Ruto hosted Ghana’s President-elect John Mahama and former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Sunday at his residence in Kilgoris, Narok County. The meeting marked a significant moment in the race for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairpersonship, with Raila Odinga vying for the coveted position in elections slated for February 2025.
During the meeting, President Ruto lauded Mahama for publicly endorsing Odinga’s candidacy for the AUC chairperson role. The gesture underscores Mahama’s commitment to fostering a united African continent, reflecting shared goals of integration and economic growth.
“We thank President-elect Mahama for declaring his support for Hon Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission chairperson candidature,” Ruto stated, emphasizing the importance of rallying African leaders behind Odinga’s vision for the continent.
Ruto also highlighted the strategic discussions held with Mahama, centering on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) initiative. The leaders reiterated their commitment to expanding intra-African trade as a means of driving economic development and integration across the continent.
Ruto expressed confidence in Odinga’s ability to lead the African Union Commission, praising his longstanding contributions to Kenya’s political and economic integration. “2025 is the year Raila Odinga becomes Chairman of the African Union Commission to help unite Africa just as he has united Kenya,” Ruto said during an address in Homa Bay County.
Odinga’s bid for the AUC chairpersonship has been gaining momentum, with support from key African leaders like Mahama strengthening his campaign. The former Prime Minister’s experience as a statesman, mediator, and advocate for regional cooperation positions him as a strong contender for the role.
The AUC chairpersonship is a crucial position in steering the African Union’s agenda, addressing challenges such as regional conflicts, economic disparities, and climate change, while promoting unity and development across the continent.
As the February 2025 elections draw near, Odinga’s candidature is seen as a pivotal moment for Kenya’s diplomatic influence within the African Union. Should he secure the position, Odinga would become a prominent figure in shaping Africa’s future on the global stage.
Ruto’s endorsement of Odinga signals a shift towards bipartisan collaboration in pursuit of Kenya’s national and continental interests, further reflecting the growing sense of unity among African leaders.
