The ongoing peace talks in Nairobi, led by Kenyan President William Ruto, are approaching a critical juncture as optimism grows among key figures involved in the South Sudan peace process. General Paul Malong, leader of the South Sudan United Front (SSUF), expressed his positive outlook on the potential outcomes of these discussions, which aim to bring lasting peace to South Sudan.
In an interview with Sudan’s media outlet, Eye Radio, General Malong shared his belief that the peace process is on the verge of a significant breakthrough. “We are expected to hit a crucial point on Monday,” Malong stated, emphasizing his confidence in Kenya’s peacekeeping efforts. He noted Kenya’s successful history in mediating peace in other regions, which bolstered his hope for a similar resolution in South Sudan.
“Other countries have had these difficulties, but in the end, they have a sense of coming together, uniting, and managing their own affairs, talking to each other to have peace at home,” General Malong remarked, highlighting the universal challenges and potential for resolution in conflict zones.
The Ruto-led peace talks, known as the Tumaini Initiative, have been praised for their inclusivity, involving all major stakeholders in the Sudan peace process. This comprehensive approach is expected to enhance the chances of a sustainable peace agreement. President Ruto’s initiative has garnered significant attention and support, particularly after his invitation to General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, leader of the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), to engage in the talks at State House, Nairobi.
Additionally, General Pagan Amum Okiech, leader of the Hold-out group referred to as the Real Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), echoed Malong’s sentiments on the uniqueness of the talks. “The talks are unique in that our leaders are learning their lessons,” Pagan stated, underscoring the educational aspect of the discussions and the leaders’ commitment to understanding and resolving their differences.
President Ruto’s dedication to achieving a favourable outcome has been a driving force behind the optimism surrounding the talks. Participants are hopeful that the negotiations will yield a constitutional text serving as the foundational law of the nation. This anticipated document aims to articulate a new social contract that all South Sudanese would collectively endorse, laying the groundwork for a unified and peaceful future.
As the talks progress, the international community watches closely, hopeful that the Tumaini Initiative will indeed pave the way for enduring peace in South Sudan. The coming days are crucial, with many looking forward to the anticipated breakthroughs that could finally bring stability to the region.
