President William Ruto acknowledged the growing concerns over extrajudicial actions carried out by some members of the security services. In a candid admission, the president emphasized that while there have been instances of excessive force, efforts to ensure accountability are underway.
Ruto, speaking on Tuesday, reassured the nation that due process is being followed and that appropriate institutions are handling cases of misconduct within the security forces. He stressed the importance of striking a delicate balance between individual freedoms and the broader need for public safety and order. “It cannot be denied that there have been instances of excessive and extrajudicial actions,” he said. “At the same time, it must also be acknowledged that due process is underway in appropriate institutions to ensure accountability.”
The president also pointed out the challenges involved in maintaining public order, acknowledging that freedoms are a cornerstone of democracy. However, he argued that these freedoms must not come at the expense of safety. “Every freedom has its limits, and public safety and order must always supersede the desire for unchecked liberty,” he added, urging citizens to recognize the importance of security in preserving a functional society.
Ruto further highlighted the risks posed by criminals exploiting constitutional rights to undermine public safety. He cautioned against allowing rights and freedoms to be used as tools for criminal activity. “We must ensure that our pursuit of rights and freedoms does not compromise our collective or individual safety,” he said, underscoring the need for careful consideration when balancing civil liberties and security.
Addressing a broader societal concern, Ruto also voiced alarm over the erosion of moral values, particularly in the context of rising violent crimes such as femicide. The president pointed to a growing tendency to redefine rights and freedoms in a manner that undermines democracy and the public interest. “This tendency to promote a definition of rights and freedoms that undermines democracy reflects a broader collapse of our value system,” Ruto stated.
He attributed the rise in violent crimes, especially femicide, to a decline in moral standards, emphasizing that values such as compassion, responsibility, and decency are vital for both personal well-being and public safety. “The disregard for moral values contributes to violent crimes, such as femicide, perpetrated by men against women,” Ruto noted, calling for a return to core values to strengthen society.
In conclusion, the president reaffirmed his commitment to upholding both security and human rights in the country. He urged Kenyans to remain vigilant in protecting public safety while preserving democratic values, warning against any efforts to exploit freedoms at the expense of the collective good.
