President William Ruto has vowed to eliminate corruption and fraud in Kenya’s healthcare system, a commitment he reiterated during the official opening of the Kilifi County International Investment Conference on Thursday. Speaking with conviction, the President assured Kenyans that the challenges of mismanagement and fraud that plagued the now-defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) will not carry over into the Sustainable Healthcare Access (SHA) program under his administration.
“There is a lot of fake news and incorrect information out there. I want to assure the country that the challenges of fraud and corruption that had bedeviled the NHIF will never happen under SHA, as long as I am in charge. It will never happen in our Universal Health Coverage plan,” Ruto stated.
The President emphasized transparency and accountability as the cornerstones of his administration’s strategy to restore trust in public healthcare. Addressing any lingering doubts about his government’s dedication, he said, “I will look the people of Kenya in the eye and tell them there will be no corruption under SHA as long as I am president.”
A New Dawn for Kenya’s Healthcare System
Ruto assured Kenyans that the new healthcare program is structured to deliver full value for contributions, prioritizing quality services and the prudent use of resources. “We must ensure that Kenyans get the benefit and value for every cent they spend on everything, including matters of health,” he added.
Under SHA, the government aims to build a system that works for all Kenyans, focusing on universal access to healthcare and eliminating financial barriers to quality services. The program is part of a broader Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda, which seeks to improve health outcomes and equity across the country.
Addressing Procurement Concerns
President Ruto also responded to concerns over the controversial medical equipment leasing program, which has faced scrutiny for alleged procurement irregularities. He clarified that the procurement process for the equipment was transparent, involving agreements between counties and the Ministry of Health, with no coercion from the national government.
“There is no obligation on any county to get any supplier. There is no one supplier; I think there are seven or so suppliers. Anybody who says they were forced by the national government to sign the contract, those are conmen and liars,” he remarked.
Ruto’s statement came a day after the Ministry of Health and the Council of Governors addressed media reports concerning the leasing of medical equipment to counties. In a joint statement issued on December 4, the two bodies clarified that the process was open and emphasized that a new approach is being adopted to ensure transparency and efficiency in managing the equipment supply program.
Restoring Public Confidence
The President’s bold declarations are seen as part of a broader effort to rebuild public confidence in Kenya’s healthcare system, which has long been marred by allegations of corruption and inefficiency. The SHA program is a critical step in aligning the healthcare sector with the country’s development goals, ensuring that every Kenyan can access essential services without the burden of financial hardship.
While Ruto’s assurances have been welcomed by many, the success of the SHA program will depend on robust implementation and oversight mechanisms. Stakeholders in the healthcare sector, including county governments, private partners, and civil society organizations, will play a vital role in holding the administration accountable to its promises.
Moving Forward
As the SHA program rolls out, Kenyans will be watching closely to see whether President Ruto’s commitment to eradicating corruption in healthcare translates into tangible improvements. With a renewed focus on transparency, efficiency, and value for money, the administration has an opportunity to build a healthcare system that truly serves the people.
If implemented effectively, the SHA could mark a turning point in Kenya’s journey toward achieving Universal Health Coverage, paving the way for a healthier and more equitable society.
