President William Ruto has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration between the government and religious organizations to foster national cohesion and improve the delivery of essential social services.
Speaking during a meeting with Evangelical and Pentecostal church leaders at State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday, Ruto underscored the critical role religious institutions play in society. He noted that both the State and religious organizations share a common mandate of serving the Kenyan people, particularly in areas such as education, healthcare, and social welfare.
“Religious faiths and the State serve the same people and have always worked together in ensuring national cohesion and providing social services, including education, health, and helping the vulnerable. We commit to maintain this partnership,” Ruto said.
The delegation of church leaders was led by Redeemed Gospel Church Presiding Bishop Kepha Omae. The meeting provided a platform to discuss the interplay between faith-based initiatives and government programs aimed at addressing pressing societal challenges.
A Historical Partnership
President Ruto’s statement reinforces a long-standing relationship between the government and religious organizations in Kenya. Faith-based institutions have historically contributed significantly to the country’s development, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Churches, mosques, and other religious bodies have built schools, hospitals, and community centers, bridging gaps where government infrastructure may be limited.
The President highlighted that the government values these contributions and is committed to creating an environment where such partnerships can thrive. “Religious organizations have been instrumental in complementing government efforts, and we will continue to work hand in hand to ensure that no Kenyan is left behind,” he added.
Promoting National Cohesion
Ruto emphasized the role of faith leaders in promoting unity and healing divisions within the country. He noted that religious organizations are uniquely positioned to foster dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation across diverse communities.
Kenya has faced various challenges to national cohesion, including political divisions and ethnic tensions. In this context, Ruto urged faith leaders to actively engage their congregations in fostering a sense of shared identity and purpose.
“Our nation’s strength lies in its diversity, and the church has a pivotal role in uniting Kenyans around common values of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect,” the President said.
Addressing Social Challenges Together
The collaboration between the government and religious institutions extends beyond moral and spiritual guidance. Churches and faith-based organizations have been vital in tackling social issues such as poverty, unemployment, and substance abuse.
During the meeting, discussions also touched on how religious organizations could amplify their efforts in supporting government programs, particularly those targeting the youth and vulnerable populations.
Bishop Kepha Omae commended the President for his recognition of the church’s role and reiterated the commitment of religious leaders to work closely with the government. “We are ready to play our part in shaping a better Kenya. Our calling aligns with the government’s mission to serve the people,” he said.
Strengthening Institutional Collaboration
President Ruto announced plans to streamline mechanisms for cooperation between religious organizations and government institutions. These include setting up frameworks to facilitate resource sharing, improve service delivery, and promote transparency and accountability in joint initiatives.
The President’s gesture is expected to strengthen the bond between the State and faith-based institutions, ensuring that their collective impact is felt across all corners of the country.
Looking Ahead
As Kenya continues to navigate various socio-economic challenges, the partnership between the government and religious organizations offers a beacon of hope for many citizens. By aligning their efforts, both entities can address immediate needs while laying the foundation for sustainable development.
President Ruto’s pledge to uphold this partnership underscores the Kenya Kwanza administration’s broader vision of inclusive governance and community empowerment. For many Kenyans, this collaboration signals a future where faith and governance work in unison to uplift society.
