Ruto: Why I Picked Opposition Members as CSs

President William Ruto announced the inclusion of opposition members in his cabinet on Thursday. Speaking in Tharaka Nithi, Ruto underscored the necessity of transcending political divisions to build a cohesive and effective government capable of tackling the country’s pressing issues.

A Call for Unity Amidst Challenges

Ruto’s decision comes in the wake of recent protests that have highlighted the nation’s socio-economic struggles. He emphasized the importance of inclusive governance, stating, “Kwa sababu ya changamoto tulizonazo katika taifa la Kenya, mimi nimeamua ya kwamba hakuna haja ya kubagua wengine” (Because of the problems that we have in our country I have decided that there is no need to continue sidelining other people). The President reiterated the need for all leaders, regardless of their political affiliations, to collaborate in addressing these challenges.

Building an Inclusive Government

Ruto’s announcement was accompanied by the nomination of four opposition members to key cabinet positions. These nominees include Hassan Joho (Mining and Blue Economy), John Mbadi (Treasury), Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives), and Opiyo Wandayi (Energy). This strategic move is aimed at harnessing a diverse range of ideas, programs, and interventions necessary for effective governance.

He articulated his vision for an inclusive government, stating, “Nimesema tutengeneze serikali ya kuunganisha wakenya wote, tulipe ile madeni ya Kenya pamoja, tutafute ushuru pamoja, tufanye maendeleo pamoja…” (I have said we should form a government that unites all Kenyans, pay off Kenya’s debts together, seek taxes together, and develop together). This reflects a commitment to collaborative problem-solving and shared responsibility in addressing the nation’s economic and social challenges.

Addressing National Issues

The President highlighted several critical areas where the new cabinet will focus their efforts. These include job creation, robust debt management, enhanced transparency and accountability in the use of public resources, mobilization of domestic resources, and optimization of public expenditure. By involving opposition members, Ruto aims to leverage a wider range of perspectives and expertise to develop comprehensive solutions to these issues.

Ruto’s remarks also touched upon the recent national unrest and the importance of upholding democratic principles. “During this time, the country has engaged in a difficult public conversation, providing an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between fundamental rights and democratic freedoms, our collective aspirations for prosperity and efforts to secure opportunities for all, and the imperative to advance the security of the State,” he said. This acknowledgment of the nation’s democratic challenges underscores the need for a united approach to governance.

Accompanying him were key figures such as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Interior Cabinet Secretary nominee Kindiki Kithure, Governor Muthomi Njuki, and Senator George Murugara, among others.

A Step Towards Reconciliation

The inclusion of opposition members in the cabinet can be seen as a step towards national reconciliation and healing. By involving leaders from different political backgrounds, Ruto aims to bridge the divide and foster a sense of collective purpose. This move is expected to not only enhance the effectiveness of the government but also to build public trust and confidence in the administration’s commitment to addressing the nation’s challenges.

In conclusion, President Ruto’s decision to include opposition members in his cabinet is a significant step towards uniting the nation and addressing Kenya’s pressing issues through inclusive and collaborative governance. As the new cabinet members take on their roles, the hope is that their combined efforts will lead to meaningful progress and a more prosperous future for all Kenyans.
