Sabina Chege: “I Cannot Sign an Impeachment Motion Against Gachagua”

Nominated MP Sabina Chege has taken a firm stand in support of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua amidst speculations of an impeachment plot against him. Chege’s commitment to Gachagua was made clear in an interview on Inooro TV, where she expressed her disbelief at the idea of ousting the DP, especially at a time when President William Ruto has called for unity and inclusion within his administration.

The Alleged Impeachment Plot

A report by The Standard detailed a late-night meeting held on Saturday, July 27, involving 21 MPs at the residence of a Cabinet Secretary nominee. The meeting allegedly concluded with a resolution to raise an impeachment motion against Deputy President Gachagua on grounds of undermining the presidency. This alleged plot has sparked controversy and drawn significant attention within the political sphere.

Sabina Chege’s Stance

Chege questioned the motives behind the alleged impeachment plot, highlighting the efforts made by the administration to foster unity. She pointed out the paradox of attempting to remove Gachagua from office while the president has taken steps to include opposition members in his cabinet.

“The Mt Kenya Kingpin is Rigathi Gachagua because he has the highest rank politically. I want to say that I would not sign the impeachment motion,” Chege asserted. She emphasized that the administration has already shown a willingness to work with opposition figures, referencing the support for Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairperson position and the inclusion of ODM members in the cabinet.

Defending Gachagua’s Record

Chege also defended Gachagua’s efforts to unite the Mt Kenya region, despite facing criticism from some local leaders. She praised Gachagua’s rise from a District Officer (D.O.) to Deputy President, highlighting his dedication and hard work.

“For instance, we did not expect Gachagua to rise to DP’s office from the D.O. He has really tried in his efforts to rise in the ranks. When he was given such a mandate, he has rallied people from the region to unite,” she pointed out.

Chege’s support for Gachagua is rooted in his accomplishments and the perceived unfairness of the backlash he has received. She cautioned President Ruto to be wary of such divisive talks, drawing parallels to the challenges Ruto himself faced during his tenure as Deputy President under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“If it’s true, it would be very unfortunate. I pray that President Ruto has not come to such thoughts because he himself went through the same thing when he deputized Uhuru. At first things seemed well until those surrounding Uhuru began talking ill of the DP,” she added.

Concerns About Cabinet Composition

In her interview, Chege also pondered the implications of President Ruto’s decision to include four ODM members in his cabinet. She questioned whether this move was genuinely aimed at unifying the country or whether it was a strategic attempt to weaken the opposition.

“If the president could include opposition members to his cabinet, this move either means he wants to unite the country or to finish ODM completely,” she noted.

Conclusion

Sabina Chege’s unwavering support for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua amid impeachment speculations underscores the complexities and tensions within Kenya’s political landscape. Her defense of Gachagua and critique of the alleged impeachment plot reflect broader concerns about unity, loyalty, and the challenges of political inclusion. As the situation unfolds, Chege’s stance highlights the ongoing struggle for cohesion and stability within the country’s leadership.
