A senior official from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was tragically killed in a robbery attack at her home in Utange, Mombasa County, on Sunday. Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, 48, was serving as the elections manager for IEBC in Kilifi County. The attack occurred around 3 am when two suspects raided her compound, targeting her and her 18-year-old son, Khasim Hassan.
According to police reports, the attackers gained access to the house by cutting the grills on the kitchen window, armed with a crowbar and a knife. One of the assailants wore a face mask, obscuring their identity. The gang violently assaulted both mother and son, with Akinyi Abubakar suffering fatal injuries after being stabbed and slashed on her head above the right eye. Her son was also seriously injured, sustaining cuts to his head.
The robbers then stole several valuable items from the home, including the deceased’s mobile phone, a 65-inch television, a sound system, and an iPad, before fleeing the scene. Despite the severity of his injuries, Khasim Hassan was able to drive his mother to Premier Hospital. Tragically, she was pronounced dead on arrival, while the son was treated for his wounds and remains hospitalized.
Police were informed of the incident by hospital officials and immediately launched an investigation. The scene of the crime was later visited by authorities as they work to identify the culprits and trace the stolen items. The police are pursuing several leads in an effort to apprehend the suspects involved.
The IEBC has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, leaving the community and colleagues of Aisha Akinyi Abubakar in shock. This attack highlights the increasing concerns over safety and security in the region, particularly in the face of violent crimes. The authorities are continuing their efforts to ensure justice is served.
