On December 12, seven passionate Kenyan motorcycle riders will embark on a monumental journey, covering 40,000 kilometers across 40 African countries over five months. This adventurous mission, aptly named ‘Around Africa on Motorcycle Concept,’ combines the love for exploration with a deep commitment to education and community support. Led by Rev Nick Korir, the team aims to take the Kenyan flag to the four extreme points of Africa, while also spreading goodwill, peace, and raising funds for the LOGOS Endowment Fund to support underprivileged youth in Kenya.
A Historic Journey Begins
The riders Havana Gari, Moses Nderitu, Kairu Mbuthia, Blixen Nderitu, Leonard Nyamunga, and Sammy Kiumbe will kick off their journey from Nairobi, traveling through the easternmost point of Africa at Xaafuun (Hafun) Point in Somalia, before heading south to Cape Agulhas in South Africa. They will continue westward to the Cape Almadi in Senegal and then north to Al-Ghiran Point in Tunisia, the continent’s northernmost point. This route will not only showcase the diversity of Africa’s landscapes but also its rich cultural tapestry.
Rev Nick Korir, the team leader, emphasizes that this ride is more than an adventure it’s a mission to celebrate Africa’s beauty and unity. “Our mission is two-fold: to celebrate the beauty and diversity of our continent as we fund-raise to establish the LOGOS Endowment Fund in support of the education of underprivileged youth in Kenya to break the cycle of poverty through transformational education,” he says. This cause resonates deeply with Korir, who views it as a way to merge his passion for youth empowerment and adventure motorcycling.
The Long Road Ahead
The ‘Around Africa on Motorcycle’ concept was first conceived four years ago and has been in preparation for the last two years. The team’s preparation has been intense, involving meticulous planning to ensure logistical and physical readiness. “We have walked through every day of this trip mentally, physically, and emotionally,” says Korir. “Mentally, to prepare for the unexpected; physically, to make sure our bodies are in the right form; emotionally, by connecting with our families who will support us from afar as we undertake this journey.”
This ride is not Korir’s first major motorcycle adventure. In December 2013, Korir and a group of riders embarked on a 50-day, 10,000-kilometer ride from Nairobi to Cape Town, demonstrating their passion for exploration and commitment to community service. Later, they undertook another journey ‘Ride 47’ across Kenya to educate people about the country, county by county. This trip to Africa’s extremities symbolizes Korir’s continuous drive to bridge gaps and connect communities through shared experiences.
Goodwill Ambassadors for Peace and Unity
The riders have been commissioned as goodwill and peace ambassadors of Kenya to the continent of Africa, appointed by His Excellency the Prime Cabinet Secretary of Kenya on December 2 at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre. This recognition underscores the riders’ role in fostering unity and solidarity across borders. Along the route, they will be joined by bikers from various African countries, celebrating the African biker community and creating bonds that transcend borders.
“The last couple of months have been a time of intense preparation,” says Korir. “We are ready for the challenges ahead, both on the road and in our hearts. This journey is not just about miles but about making a difference.” The team’s commitment to their mission is palpable both to share stories of Africa’s diverse beauty and to raise funds to support the education of underprivileged youth in Kenya. The LOGOS Endowment Fund, established through this ride, aims to provide scholarships, mentorship, and support to young people striving for a better future.
As they prepare to embark on this historic ride, the team acknowledges the challenges ahead—broad landscapes, rough terrain, and the unpredictable weather. However, their focus remains unwavering on the mission: celebrating Africa’s unity and the transformative power of education. This journey is not just a motorcycle trip but a powerful statement about the power of adventure to inspire change and foster hope across the continent.
A Call for Support
The ‘Around Africa on Motorcycle’ journey is more than a personal adventure; it’s a call for support from all Kenyans and well-wishers across the continent. The riders hope to engage communities along their route, sharing their story and inspiring others to contribute to the LOGOS Endowment Fund. As they carry the Kenyan flag to the extremities of Africa, they invite everyone to join them in this historic ride, symbolizing a new era of African unity, adventure, and educational empowerment.
This 5-month journey is not just a ride it’s a movement. By taking the Kenyan flag to the corners of Africa, the riders aim to inspire change, raise awareness, and create opportunities for young people to break free from the cycle of poverty through education. The world is watching, and through this motorcycle expedition, Kenya’s message of hope, unity, and perseverance will resonate far and wide.
