The commitment to nurturing sports talent and infrastructure, Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ababu Namwamba, has announced a significant reward for the national rugby 7s team, Shujaa. Following their triumphant return to the HSBC World Rugby Series, Shujaa has been awarded Ksh. 5.7 million, a gesture that highlights the government’s support for the team’s outstanding performance.
Each player and member of the technical bench will receive Ksh. 300,000, an amount that reflects the team’s hard work and dedication. This monetary reward comes as part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of Sports to ensure Shujaa maintains their topflight status after their recent promotion. The team’s relegation to the Challenger Series last year was a setback, but their recent success has reignited hopes and expectations.
Cabinet Secretary Namwamba emphasized that beyond financial incentives, the long-term development of rugby in Kenya hinges on the availability of world-class facilities. He announced plans to build and renovate rugby stadiums across the country, a move that aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to upgrade football facilities in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2027.
The CS highlighted specific targets for renovation, including the RFUEA grounds on Ngong Road. Additionally, there are ambitious plans to establish a state-of-the-art rugby center at Kasarani. These facilities are expected to serve as training and development hubs, fostering new talent and ensuring that Kenya’s rugby teams are well-prepared for international competitions.
Namwamba acknowledged that the lack of investment in sports infrastructure has been a longstanding issue in Kenya. However, he expressed optimism, citing the ministry’s recent initiatives to uplift stadiums over the past year and a half. This renewed focus on infrastructure is poised to benefit not just rugby but other sports disciplines as well.
Looking ahead, Namwamba expressed confidence in Shujaa’s ability to replicate their top form in the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. He stressed the importance of proper preparations, stating that the ministry is committed to supporting Shujaa and other sports disciplines as they represent Kenya on the global stage.
“Proper preparations are key for good results, and as the ministry, we are thrilled to support Shujaa alongside other sports disciplines,” Namwamba stated. The ministry’s backing is seen as crucial for the team’s success, providing them with the resources and infrastructure needed to compete at the highest levels.
