Olympic champion Sifan Hassan has shared the deep emotional connection she has with the London Marathon as she sets her sights on challenging Ruth Chepngetich’s marathon world record. Hassan is preparing to headline the prestigious event on April 27, alongside an elite field that includes world record-holder Chepngetich and two-time Berlin Marathon champion Tigist Assefa.
Reflecting on her journey, Hassan spoke about why the London Marathon holds a unique place in her heart. “London is where I grew up as an athlete and as a human being, as a person,” she said. “London is when I was like, ‘I have never raced the marathon, I’m just somebody who thinks this is possible to do.’ So I decided to do it. I was scared, but it was a challenge. You don’t know how it’s going to go, but you’re just curious about it.”
Her debut in the marathon at the 2023 London Marathon was a defining moment. Despite struggling in the middle of the race and feeling pain, Hassan showed incredible resilience. She fell behind the leaders but made a stunning comeback, ultimately sprinting to victory. This victory was not just a triumph of athleticism but also a personal journey. “It just taught me as a human being. You only know what’s possible when you try. When you keep going and try. That’s the time I dream about,” she reflected.
As she prepares for the 2024 edition, Hassan has set her sights on breaking Chepngetich’s marathon world record of 2:09:56, set at the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Chepngetich’s performance made her the first woman to break the 2:10 barrier in the marathon, a milestone that Hassan acknowledges as monumental. “When she (Chepngetich) ran 2:09, I felt like I was just watching a number. My brain couldn’t even process it. It’s just very hard… As long as the female heart is strong, it just gives me confidence that maybe it’ll take a long time and I’ll have to train harder and longer, but it’s possible,” Hassan said, expressing optimism about her ability to break the record.
The 2024 London Marathon promises to be an unforgettable event, with a highly competitive field. Chepngetich’s return to the race adds an extra layer of excitement, as she seeks to defend her world record. Meanwhile, Assefa’s consistent excellence makes her a strong contender for the title as well.
In the men’s elite field, the event will feature four-time London Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge, who will face stiff competition from new challengers. Among them is two-time world cross-country champion Jacob Kiplimo, who will be making his marathon debut, as well as Olympic champion Tamirat Tola.
For Hassan, the London Marathon is not just another race; it’s a chance to challenge herself and to continue her journey of growth as an athlete. Her emotional connection to the event and her unwavering belief in her potential make her one of the most exciting athletes to watch in 2024. Whether or not she succeeds in breaking the world record, her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and self-belief.
