Initial reports suggest a cable malfunction might have triggered the collapse. Witnesses described how the cable appeared to come loose, causing the chairs to bounce violently and eject passengers. Jamie Pelegri, a Spotify executive who was present, confirmed on social media that the incident involved the Canal Roya chairlift. “Luckily, we are fine, but there are injured people. We’ve seen several stretchers being brought down,” Pelegri shared.
Spain’s Guardia Civil has released footage showing helicopters landing near the scene to deploy emergency personnel. Rescue efforts remain ongoing, with dozens still stranded on the 15-meter-high chairlift. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area to facilitate operations.
