Social Media Influencer Murugi Munyi Arrested During Finance Bill Protest

Murugi Munyi, a prominent figure in social media content creation, was arrested during a demonstration in Nairobi’s CBD protesting the proposed 2024 Finance Bill. The bill has triggered widespread public opposition due to its potential impact on the cost of living.

While participating in the protest, Munyi shared videos and photos from inside a police vehicle, detailing her ordeal. She described chaotic scenes leading to her arrest, recounting how she and others encountered tear gas and police intervention. Munyi assured her followers that despite being taken to Central Police Station, she remained undeterred, confident that legal support was being organized for their release.

Alongside Munyi, activist Boniface Mwangi reported that his vehicle was impounded and detailed incidents where police confiscated protest materials and detained several individuals. The arrests occurred amidst escalating tensions over the Finance Bill, which has drawn criticism for potentially exacerbating economic hardships across various sectors of society.
