Harambee Stars defender Zak Vyner put in a solid performance but was unable to prevent Bristol City from falling to a 1-0 defeat against Burnley in a high-stakes Championship clash at Turf Moor on Sunday morning.
Vyner, who was called up to the Harambee Stars squad in June 2024 but is yet to make an appearance due to documentation issues regarding his passport, has been a key figure in Bristol City’s defence this season.
The 27-year-old made two tackles and two interceptions but struggled to contain Jayden Antony, who dribbled past him four times as he operated on the right side of a back three. He maintained a decent, if unspectacular, passing accuracy of 79 per cent.
Zian Flemming’s stunning first-half free-kick proved decisive, boosting Burnley’s push for an immediate return to the Premier League as Scott Parker’s side preserved their unbeaten home record with a narrow 1-0 victory over play-off hopefuls Bristol City.
The win extended Burnley’s unbeaten run in the Championship to 26 matches, dating back to a defeat at Millwall at the start of November.
It also saw the Clarets draw level on points with second-placed Leeds United, who were held by Swansea, with league leaders Sheffield United just two points ahead.
Burnley’s 16th-minute opener had Premier League quality written all over it, with Jason Knight conceding a free-kick for a foul on Marcus Edwards.
Flemming then stepped up and unleashed an unstoppable right-footed effort from 22 yards, curling the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net.
In League One, Vincent Harper came off the bench but was unable to prevent Exeter City from suffering a 2-0 defeat to promotion favourites Wrexham United.
The loss ended their recent strong run of form, which had seen them record two wins and two draws in their last four matches.
Ollie Rathbone’s deflected first-half strike put Phil Parkinson’s side in control, before Jay Rodriguez’s second-half penalty sealed the result.
Meanwhile, Zech Obiero, recently drafted into Kenya’s U-20 provisional squad for the upcoming AFCON U-20 tournament, was left out as Leyton Orient secured a comfortable 1-0 win over Stevenage, courtesy of Charlie Kelman’s match-winning goal.
