Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes took another hit as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest. Despite dominating possession, the visitors struggled to break down a resolute Forest defense, leaving them 13 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
With key attacking players Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli all sidelined, Mikel Arteta was forced to deploy midfielder Mikel Merino as an emergency forward. Arsenal lacked a clinical edge, failing to capitalize on their control of the game. Their best opportunity came late on when Martin Odegaard twice had shots cleared off the line, only for the move to be ruled offside.
Forest, aiming for their first return to the Champions League since 1980, embraced the underdog role with a gritty defensive display. Having recently conceded heavily, including four goals in the first half at Newcastle, they responded with a much-improved performance. Murillo was outstanding at the back, while Callum Hudson-Odoi caused problems on the counter.
Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori was at the center of early drama. Booked for a foul on Hudson-Odoi, he struggled against the winger and was substituted at halftime. He had Arsenal’s best first-half chance, striking the inside of the post, but Matz Sels collected the rebound.
The second half saw Arsenal push harder. Merino’s header forced a sharp save from Sels, while Kieran Tierney went close at the near post. Set pieces appeared their best route to goal, with Declan Rice’s deliveries causing problems. Arteta admitted their lack of attacking options hurt them, saying, “We generated chances, especially from corners, but couldn’t take them. We’re very disappointed.”
Forest, who thrive on counterattacking, had few chances but almost stole a late winner. Chris Wood forced a good save from David Raya before William Saliba made a crucial tackle to prevent a potential breakaway goal.
For Forest, the point was invaluable as they strengthened their surprise challenge for a top-four finish. With Manchester City up next in the league, they continue to defy expectations, standing just one place behind the defending champions despite the vast difference in resources.Arsenal’s Title Hopes Fade Further in Stalemate at Resilient Forest
