FC Köln have been dealt a significant blow in their quest for promotion back to the Bundesliga after it was officially confirmed that Linton Maina has suffered a sprained ankle. The winger, who is the leading assist provider in the 2. Bundesliga, underwent an MRI scan on Sunday following an injury sustained in Köln’s match against Karlsruher SC.
Maina attempted to continue playing after picking up the knock but was ultimately forced to leave the pitch in the 38th minute. The MRI results revealed that the sprain is moderate, meaning he will need to go through a period of rest and rehabilitation. While the exact recovery timeline remains uncertain, similar injuries typically require a few weeks to a couple of months for full healing, depending on severity.
Köln’s medical team will closely monitor his progress and provide updates throughout his recovery process. Head coach Gerhard Struber expressed his concern following the match, acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the injury. “We spoke briefly. It’s an ankle injury. We don’t yet know what exactly happened. The ankle is glowing a little, which is not the best sign. We’ll do a scan on Sunday and then we’ll know more.”
Maina’s absence could be a major setback for Köln, given his crucial role in the team’s attacking play. The dynamic winger has been in outstanding form this season, leading the league with ten assists and also contributing three goals. With a total of 13 goal involvements, he is tied as the team’s most influential player alongside striker Damion Downs.
Köln have been struggling in attack in recent weeks, managing just five goals in their last seven matches. Losing Maina for an extended period could further complicate their promotion ambitions. His presence on the field has been pivotal, offering creativity and energy that has helped drive Köln’s attacking play throughout the season.
Midfielder Florian Kainz emphasized Maina’s importance to the team, both on and off the pitch. “Linton is very important for us. On the pitch and also within the team. An absence would really hurt, I hope it’s nothing serious.”
Born and raised in Berlin to a Kenyan father and a German mother, Maina started his footballing journey at a young age. He spent eight years at Hannover 96, where he developed his skills before moving to FC Köln in 2022 at the age of 22. Since then, he has played regularly in both the Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga, proving to be a key player for the club.
Although he has represented Germany at the youth level, Maina remains eligible to play for the Harambee Stars. His strong performances this season have sparked increased interest in his international future, with Kenyan football fans hopeful that he might choose to represent the national team.
For now, Köln will have to cope without their star winger as he focuses on his recovery. The club will be hoping for a swift return as they continue their battle for promotion back to Germany’s top flight.
