Brighton & Hove Albion’s attempt to secure Brøndby midfielder Clement Mutahi Bischoff has fallen through after the two clubs failed to reach an agreement. The Premier League side had reportedly lined up a deal worth around €8 million ($8.33m; £6.65m – Ksh 1.2 billion) for the highly-rated 19-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window. However, negotiations have now collapsed, leaving the player’s future uncertain.
Bischoff, a versatile left-sided player, has demonstrated his ability to play both as a left-back and in midfield. This season, he has been a key figure for Brøndby, making 25 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals, and providing eight assists. His performances also earned him a place in Denmark’s U21 national team, where he has earned two caps.
The player comes from a footballing family, as he is the nephew of former defender Mikkel Bischoff, who played for clubs such as Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday, and Coventry City. His blend of technical skill and physical presence has attracted interest from several clubs, with Brighton emerging as a serious contender before talks fell apart.
The failed transfer comes after an active winter transfer window for Brighton. The club secured Diego Gomez from Inter Miami, defender Eiran Cashin from Derby County, and Greek forward Stefanos Tzimas from Nürnberg, though Tzimas remains on loan with his current club. The addition of Bischoff would have further strengthened Brighton’s midfield and left-side options, but the deal is now off the table.
Bischoff’s future at the international level also remains an intriguing storyline. Although he has represented Denmark at youth levels, he remains eligible to play for Kenya, which could make him a major addition to the Harambee Stars if he chooses to switch allegiance. If he opts for Kenya, he would become only the second Kenyan to play in the English Premier League after Victor Wanyama, who made history with Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.
There are several other players with Kenyan roots who remain eligible for the Harambee Stars. Tyler Onyango of Everton was born in England but could represent Kenya through his father. Silko Amari Otieno Thomas of Leicester City has both Kenyan and Jamaican heritage, making him another potential prospect. Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence also has Kenyan roots and could theoretically be an option for the national team.
Despite the breakdown in negotiations with Brighton, Bischoff’s talent continues to attract attention. With his versatility, technical ability, and experience in a competitive European league, he remains a player to watch in the coming months. Whether he stays at Brøndby, moves to another club, or eventually finds his way to the English Premier League remains to be seen.
