AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda has pointed out a major aspect that makes Gor Mahia a stronger team than his own club, emphasizing the crucial role of community support.
Shikanda acknowledged that Gor Mahia benefits significantly from the backing of the Luo community, which has continuously rallied behind the club both financially and in other ways. He particularly noted that the support of a prominent political figure has provided stability for the team during challenging times.
“Sometimes I envy our arch-rivals Gor Mahia because the community chips in, in terms of supporting the team. Their strongest point has always been the leadership and financial assistance they receive in times of trouble,” Shikanda explained.
He contrasted this with AFC Leopards, which he believes struggles with internal perceptions regarding leadership. According to him, one of the biggest problems at the club is the belief that the chairman bears sole responsibility for the team’s fortunes.
“It has not been easy. It has been very difficult. The problem with AFC Leopards is that the community believes the club belongs to the chairman. Once you take the seat, you are put through baptism by fire, and everyone leaves the team to you, making you feel alone,” he lamented.
AFC Leopards have also been dealing with a prolonged title drought. The last time the club won the FKF Premier League title was in 1998, making it 26 years without a league triumph. Despite this, Shikanda insists that success should not only be measured by trophies.
“In life, any team, organization, or institution usually experiences a dip before it starts thriving. Gor Mahia had the same, AFC Leopards had the same, Simba SC had the same, and Yanga SC of Tanzania also went through it,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Gor Mahia have been enjoying a dominant period in Kenyan football, winning the last two consecutive FKF Premier League titles. They are currently in a tight race for the 2024-25 season title. The club sits third in the 18-team league with 42 points, just three behind the leaders, Police, but with a game in hand.
On the other hand, AFC Leopards have accumulated 36 points but have struggled recently, managing only one win in their last five matches. Their inconsistent form continues to be a challenge as they seek to reclaim their former glory.
