The Mashemeji Derby will take place later this season, and Gor Mahia’s new signing has vowed to make a name for himself during the encounter.
New Gor Mahia signing Patrick Essombe has put AFC Leopards on notice, promising to slay them when the two sides meet in the much-awaited Mashemeji Derby in April.
The Cameroonian forward, who joined the record FKF Premier League champions in the mid-season transfer window, has stated that even though he was unfamiliar with the Mashemeji Derby before arriving in Kenya, he thrives on scoring in big matches.
Speaking about his move, Essombe revealed that he was aware of Gor Mahia and had followed some of their past continental performances. However, the significance of the Mashemeji Derby was new to him. Despite this, he is eager to leave his mark on the fixture and has set his sights on scoring in both legs of the clash.
The highly anticipated match, initially scheduled for March 2, was postponed for the second time this season due to the unavailability of a venue. According to the revised fixtures, the derby will now be played on April 6, with expectations of thrilling action and intense rivalry between the two sides.
Essombe has quickly settled into his new environment and is adapting well to Gor Mahia’s culture. He acknowledged that assistant captain Geoffrey Ochieng played a significant role in helping him understand the importance of the Mashemeji Derby. His teammates emphasized that matches against AFC Leopards are far from ordinary league fixtures, further fueling his excitement and determination to perform at his best.
The Cameroonian forward has already featured in two matches for Gor Mahia since joining from Sportive de Douala. Alongside him, his compatriot, goalkeeper Giscard Mavoungou, also signed for the club in the mid-season transfer window.
Essombe made his debut for Gor Mahia in a Cup competition, followed by his league debut against Kariobangi Sharks. In the latter match, he played for 45 minutes before being withdrawn by head coach Sinca Mihic. Despite the limited game time, he remains optimistic about making a significant impact in the league and, more importantly, in the Mashemeji Derby.
Gor Mahia are currently in the hunt for a record 22nd league title, engaging in a fierce three-way battle with Kenya Police and Tusker FC. With the stakes high and competition intense, Essombe’s contributions could prove crucial in the title race. His confidence and hunger for success suggest that he is ready to rise to the occasion, making the upcoming derby even more intriguing.
The Mashemeji Derby has always been a highly charged affair, bringing together two of Kenya’s biggest football clubs. Fans can expect fireworks as both teams fight for bragging rights and crucial points in the title race. With Essombe eager to shine on the big stage, Gor Mahia supporters will be hoping their new signing delivers on his promise and helps propel the club toward yet another championship triumph.
