The former Glamorgan head coach has received a suspended £500 fine, reprimand, and caution for making comments with racist and sexist connotations.
The coach was charged by an independent cricket regulator and dismissed by the Welsh county in December following allegations regarding his conduct. He admitted to the charge, which included three specific allegations detailed in the Cricket Discipline Commission’s judgment.
One allegation stated that he asked players of Asian backgrounds about their “Cricinfo” age, implying that Asian players do not always disclose their real age. Another accusation involved remarks about cricket selection decisions in Pakistan, suggesting that selections were based on personal connections rather than merit. The final allegation concerned his comments during fielding sessions, where he referenced a women’s cricket team when criticizing male players for a lack of intensity or inadequate throwing.
The adjudicator noted that the coach’s position increased the severity of the situation, emphasizing that leadership shapes an organization’s culture. The comments were seen as undermining efforts to make cricket an inclusive sport. It was further highlighted that players had begun repeating the remarks, reinforcing their impact.
Although it was concluded that the comments carried racist and sexist connotations, there was no suggestion of discriminatory intent. The coach fully cooperated with the investigation, acknowledged making the statements, and issued an apology if any offense was taken.
In addition to the reprimand, fine, and caution, he is required to attend an educational course. The fine has been suspended for a year.
Glamorgan Cricket stated that it welcomed the decision, reiterating a zero-tolerance stance on discriminatory behavior. The club took swift action when the issue was raised to protect those affected and reinforce its commitment to maintaining respectful and inclusive conduct within the organization. The club also expressed confidence in its reporting systems, citing this case as an example of their effectiveness in identifying and addressing inappropriate behavior.
