Renowned football commentator Fred Arocho has tipped record champions Gor Mahia to clinch the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title, highlighting their edge over rivals Police and Tusker. According to Arocho, Gor Mahia’s dominance in the league is not just due to their strength but also because they face minimal competition from other top teams. Arocho, who made these remarks on a popular radio show, compared Gor Mahia’s situation to that of Liverpool, suggesting that while the club may not be the most outstanding, the lack of serious competition could give them an easy path to the title.
Gor Mahia’s recent performance, including a 1-0 win over KCB in a rain-delayed match on March 7, allowed them to close the gap on league leaders Kenya Police and second-placed Tusker. Despite the tough competition, Arocho believes that Gor Mahia have a clear advantage over their closest rivals. He pointed out that Police’s recent 0-0 draw against struggling City Stars demonstrated their vulnerability, which could prove costly in the title race.
Tusker, 13-time league champions, also had a setback in their bid for the championship. They were held to a 1-1 draw by Mara Sugar, a team that is playing in the top-tier league for the first time. This result, coupled with their inconsistent form, has further weakened their chances of catching up with Gor Mahia. In the last five matches, Tusker has managed just two wins and three draws, showing a clear dip in their form when it matters most.
Arocho also criticized Tusker’s decision to part ways with experienced coach Robert Matano, suggesting that this move could be detrimental to the club’s title hopes. While he acknowledged that Matano’s successor, Charles Okere, is a capable coach, Arocho noted that Okere lacks the experience needed to lead a top team like Tusker to the league title. Having previously been an assistant coach at Tusker, Okere’s lack of managerial experience in the Premier League could make it difficult for him to compete at the highest level, especially in a season where consistency is key.
As things stand, Police remain at the top of the standings with 49 points, though their recent form has been marked by inconsistency. Under the guidance of Burundian coach Etienne Ndayiragije, Police have won twice, drawn twice, and lost once in their last five matches. Their inability to maintain a consistent level of performance could eventually cost them as the season progresses.
With Tusker and Police faltering, Gor Mahia is now in a prime position to take advantage of the situation. Their consistent form, coupled with the fact that they have a game in hand, puts them in a strong position to secure their 22nd league title. The gap between Gor Mahia and the leaders is now just three points, and if they continue their good run of form, they could soon overtake the top teams and clinch the title.
Gor Mahia’s edge is further emphasized by the fact that, compared to Police and Tusker, they have fewer weaknesses to address. Their squad depth, experience, and ability to win critical matches make them the most well-rounded team in the league. With the season entering its final stretch, all eyes are on Gor Mahia as they look to reclaim their place at the top of Kenyan football.
