Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic has identified a key flaw in his team as the title race in the FKF Premier League heats up.
Defending champions Gor Mahia secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Bandari FC at Dandora Stadium, keeping their title defense on track. The win ensures they remain in contention with league leaders Kenya Police and second-placed Tusker FC.
The match started on a high note for Gor Mahia, with Alpha Onyango finding the back of the net in the 14th minute, providing his team with an early advantage.
Throughout the game, Gor Mahia dominated possession, continuously pressing forward against a resilient Bandari side. Their offensive approach kept the pressure on their opponents, but they struggled to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities.
It was Chris Ochieng’ who sealed the victory in the 88th minute with a brilliant solo effort. He skillfully weaved past defenders before slotting home the decisive goal, securing three vital points for his team.
After the match, Mihic expressed satisfaction with the result while acknowledging the tactical adjustments that played a crucial role in their success. However, he was critical of his team’s approach in possession.
“I’m always happy. Sometimes more emotional, yes. But when you have a tough game… The main problem was that we were good without the ball. But with the passing, we didn’t have many options,” Mihic said.
He admitted that Gor Mahia initially struggled to create clear opportunities, prompting him to make key tactical changes that ultimately turned the game in their favor.
“We changed the game. We changed the system. I saw where the problem was. I put in a striker, dropped one midfielder Austin came out because the team needed it. We switched to a 5-3-2 and closed the midfield with Morrison and Wendell. After that, every attack we transitioned into was dangerous,” he explained.
Despite missing several chances to finish the game earlier, Mihic praised his team’s defensive organization and overall tactical discipline.
“We should have finished the game earlier many chances from just one meter, just sliding, but we didn’t. This team is okay, but they didn’t create too many chances. Maybe two or three clear ones, that’s it. I think we deserved this win. Tactically, we looked better than them, especially without the ball.”
The victory keeps Gor Mahia firmly in the title race. They now have 42 points, maintaining pressure on Kenya Police, who lead the table with 45 points, and second-placed Tusker, who have 44 points. With the competition tightening, Mihic will be keen on addressing the issues he highlighted to ensure his team remains in contention for another league triumph.
