Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno believes Kenya has what it takes to beat Gabon and revive their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in history.
Otieno, who plays for South African Premiership side Richards Bay, has said the 3-3 draw against The Gambia has instilled belief in the team, and the players are brimming with confidence heading into the Gabon match at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.
“Everyone is ready to go for tomorrow. I think the fact that we are playing at home gives us an extra push going into the game, so everyone is prepared,” Otieno said.
The former ZESCO United shot-stopper emphasized that playing in front of their own fans for the first time in four years serves as extra motivation.
“We are happy to be back home because we’ve been playing away for a long time. We look forward to the fans and the support of the home crowd. I am sure, just like any other day, we are all going to give it our best.”
Harambee Stars currently sit fourth in the six-team pool after securing six points from five matches. The Gabon encounter offers the team, led by captain Michael Olunga, an opportunity to close the gap with leaders Ivory Coast and second-placed Gabon.
Otieno, who saved a crucial penalty against The Gambia, insists that the match against Gabon will be highly tactical and called for caution. “I think it’s going to be a good tactical game. Yes, they have good players, but we also have strong players in our team. Tomorrow will be very interesting and tactical.”
Head coach Benni McCarthy is expected to make changes to his starting lineup. The South African tactician has hinted at giving starting roles to players who made an impact off the bench against Gambia after their impressive cameo appearances.
The team must be defensively solid to avoid lapses in concentration, which were evident against Gambia when they conceded two easy goals. McCarthy will also be keen to ensure a fluid midfield, as Stars struggled to impose themselves in a below-par first-half performance against Gambia.
With a sold-out Nyayo Stadium providing a charged atmosphere, the team will be looking to capitalize on home advantage and deliver a performance that reignites their World Cup qualification campaign. The match kicks off at 4:00 pm.
