National Super League (NSL) leaders Nairobi United missed a golden opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table after being held to a goalless draw by MCF FC at Dandora Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, both teams failed to find the back of the net, ultimately sharing the spoils with a point each. Nairobi United, who have been in strong form this season, will surely be disappointed with the outcome, as they had the chance to open a bigger gap between them and their nearest rivals.
The match saw both teams struggle with finishing, despite some good build-up play. Nairobi United had their best chance in the first half when their forward was put through on goal, but MCF’s goalkeeper made a vital save. In the second half, MCF FC also had opportunities to capitalize on mistakes in the Nairobi United defense, but failed to convert. The match was an intense affair, with both sides working hard to break the deadlock, but ultimately, neither side could gain the upper hand.
Meanwhile, in Mombasa, Mombasa United produced a dominant performance against Migori Youth, winning 4-1 in an action-packed encounter at the Serani Sports Ground. The match was a thrilling display of attacking football, with Mombasa United showing clinical finishing and solid team play throughout.
Mombasa United took the lead in the 15th minute through Bakari Nyae. The goal came from a rebound after Migori Youth’s goalkeeper, Victor Kamungo, failed to deal with a powerful cross from Answar Shamuni. The early goal set the tone for the match, and Mombasa United looked confident and organized in their attacking play.
Migori Youth responded in the 26th minute when Paul Okoth capitalized on a defensive mix-up inside the Mombasa United box to equalize. The goal seemed to inject some life into the visitors, but Mombasa United regained the lead just before halftime. Jack Marura’s powerful low shot into the bottom corner after a rebound from Kamungo’s failed save sent Mombasa United into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
Early in the second half, Mombasa United extended their lead. Marura struck again in the 50th minute, heading in a well-placed cross from Lawrence Okoth. The header put Mombasa United comfortably ahead at 3-1, and from there, it was clear that the hosts were in control of the match. Despite spirited efforts from Migori Youth, particularly from Clinton Okoth and Paul Okoth, they were unable to break down Mombasa United’s solid defense.
Migori Youth continued to press for a goal but found themselves thwarted by the brilliant performances of Mombasa United’s defense and goalkeeper Kevin Tila, who made several crucial saves. In the 69th minute, Mombasa United sealed the victory with a fourth goal. Veteran midfielder Wilberforce Lugogo provided a smart pass to Paul Osama, who calmly slotted the ball past substitute goalkeeper Michael Ogambo to make it 4-1.
Migori Youth coach Sammy Owano expressed his frustration after the match, admitting that his side didn’t play according to plan. He said, “We didn’t play as we had planned. I’m not sure what went wrong today, but we’ll work to bounce back.” On the other hand, Mombasa United assistant coach Mwalimu Said praised his team’s efforts, stating, “We prepared well and created more chances than in our previous games. I’m happy we were able to convert and get the four goals.”
The result solidified Mombasa United’s position in the mid-table, while Migori Youth will have to regroup and focus on their next matches to avoid further setbacks. Mombasa United will undoubtedly take confidence from their convincing performance as they continue their NSL campaign.
