Murang’a Seal coach John Njogu has expressed confidence in his team’s progress and outlined their ultimate goal for the remainder of the FKF Premier League season. Following a 1-1 draw with AFC Leopards last Saturday, Njogu reflected on the improvements his side has made since he took over as head coach in December 2024.
Currently sitting ninth on the league table with 23 points from 18 games, Murang’a Seal has shown significant improvement in 2025. The team has won six matches, drawn five, and lost seven so far. This year, they’ve only suffered one defeat a narrow 1-0 loss to Kenya Police—demonstrating the positive impact of Njogu’s leadership since replacing Juma Abdallah.
Njogu attributes the team’s resurgence to a shift in their style of play, emphasizing a technical, free-flowing approach that aligns with the players’ strengths. “We have not made much of a difference. We just gave them freedom to play. Our players are not physically robust. They are more technical, so asking them to resort to power play would be setting them up to fail,” Njogu explained. His focus has been on allowing the players to enjoy the game, which has resulted in more fluid and entertaining football. He pointed out that players like Joe Waithira and Lucas Maina are now performing at a higher level, and this has been a key factor in the team’s improvement.
Murang’a Seal’s approach has made them one of the most exciting teams to watch in the league, with their tactical discipline and creativity drawing praise from fans and pundits alike. In their recent match against AFC Leopards, Seal took the lead through a well-executed team move, with Waithira scoring the opening goal. However, they were pegged back just before halftime when Julius Masaba leveled for Leopards.
Njogu acknowledged the quality of their opponents, noting that AFC Leopards have a talented squad. “AFC Leopards have quality players, and you do not expect them to miss from such situations,” he said. Despite the equalizer, Njogu was pleased with his team’s overall performance, particularly their approach to the game. He made tactical adjustments to ensure his side remained compact and avoided being exposed by the attacking threat of Leopards.
“It is all about the match approach. Against Leopards, you cannot afford to be expansive as you would expose yourself. You have to be careful. They had a lot of chances to take the lead but did not take them, so we are grateful,” Njogu explained.
Despite their current mid-table position, Njogu remains optimistic about Murang’a Seal’s prospects this season. He has not ruled out a title challenge, stating that the team will continue to fight for the top spot. “We have not given up on the title. We will continue contesting for it. Hopefully, we will secure a top-five finish in the end,” he said.
Since his appointment, Njogu has overseen steady progress, including a victory against Mathare United in December. With a strong emphasis on player freedom and expression on the pitch, Murang’a Seal is poised to challenge for a higher position in the table as they continue to improve under Njogu’s guidance.
