Nicholas Musonye, the chair of the local organizing committee (LOC) for the African Nations Championships (CHAN), has expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing renovation work at Nyayo and Kasarani Stadium, two of Kenya’s most prominent sports venues. Musonye has highlighted the remarkable transformation these stadiums have undergone, a significant improvement from their previous dilapidated condition. He reassured the public that both venues now boast a completely new outlook, one that will undoubtedly surprise many who are familiar with their past state.
In an interview, Musonye emphasized the remarkable efforts put in by the government and various contractors to modernize these facilities. He specifically praised the dedication of the workers, many of whom have been working tirelessly, even through the night, to meet the required standards. Musonye expressed his confidence in the progress made, noting that the difference between the current state of the stadiums and their former condition is akin to night and day.
“People will be amazed when they come to Nyayo and Kasarani. These stadiums are no longer what they used to be. Their look has been entirely overhauled. I would like to commend the government for working around the clock to ensure that the progress we see today is realized,” Musonye said. This positive transformation is expected to boost the confidence of Kenyans and fans worldwide, especially as both venues are set to host major international events in the coming months.
One of the significant events that will take place at the newly renovated Nyayo Stadium is a World Cup qualifier match between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Gabon in March. Musonye believes that this match will be an excellent opportunity for both the stadium and the team to demonstrate their readiness for the upcoming CHAN tournament. He urged Kenyans to attend the match, emphasizing that it will serve as a test run for the larger event, assuring fans that Kenya will be well-prepared for the continental competition. “I encourage all Kenyans to come to Nyayo Stadium on the 24th of March for the World Cup qualifier. It will be an important opportunity for us to showcase our readiness for CHAN,” Musonye added.
The local organizing committee is also gearing up for CHAN, the largest football event Kenya has ever hosted. Originally scheduled for February 2025, the tournament was postponed to August to allow the host countries Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania more time to finalize their preparations. The event will see Nyayo and Kasarani Stadia co-host the matches, which will undoubtedly showcase their improved conditions to the world.
Despite the challenges and delays that have hindered the renovation process, Musonye and other officials are confident that the stadia will be fully ready in time for CHAN. The contractors, who have been working under immense pressure, have made significant strides in ensuring that the facilities meet the world-class standards required for international competitions. “The contractors have really given their all to make sure both stadiums are up to par. We are pleased with the progress, and we are confident that both Nyayo and Kasarani will be ready for CHAN,” said Musonye.
In addition to local inspections, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has sent officials to evaluate the progress of the renovations. According to Musonye, these inspectors have been impressed with the improvements and have given their approval for the facilities. “We’ve had regular meetings with CAF representatives, and they are happy with the progress we’ve made. They have given us their approval,” Musonye said.
The refurbishment of Nyayo and Kasarani Stadium comes at a crucial time for Kenyan football, as the country is eager to host a major continental tournament. The improvements to these iconic venues will not only enhance the experience for players and fans but also ensure that Kenya meets the CAF standards required to host such a prestigious event. With the government’s commitment to the renovations and the efforts of the local organizing committee, Kenya is poised to successfully host CHAN, marking a major milestone for the country’s sporting infrastructure.
