Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has raised concerns following his team’s 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad in the Europa League Round of 16 on Thursday. While the result itself left United with much to think about, Amorim’s primary focus post-match was the apparent tension between striker Rasmus Hojlund and fullback Diogo Dalot.
The friction between the two players was evident on the pitch, particularly in the first half, where frustration boiled over due to decision-making issues. One key moment of tension occurred when Dalot sprinted down the right flank and found himself in a promising position to deliver a cross to Hojlund, who had gained an advantage over his marker. Instead of delivering the ball early, Dalot hesitated, choosing to cut back, allowing Real Sociedad’s defense to recover. The opportunity was lost, and Hojlund’s visible frustration highlighted a disconnect between the two players.
After the match, Amorim acknowledged Dalot’s overall contribution but pointed out that his indecision at that moment proved costly. The manager suggested that Dalot’s hesitation may have stemmed from uncertainty over whether Hojlund was in the best position to convert the chance.
“It’s hard to say, but perhaps Diogo wasn’t sure whether Rasmus had the advantage and felt he had time to make a decision,” Amorim explained. “Both players are anxious to score and to win games, and they are doing their best. However, in moments like that, they might not always choose the best option.”
The manager emphasized the need to move forward, reinforcing that disagreements like these should not turn into lasting disputes within the squad. “Rasmus did well, Dalot did well, but the decision wasn’t the best. What’s important is to move on and not dwell on it.”
The match highlighted not only tactical issues for United but also ongoing concerns about Hojlund’s form. The Danish striker is enduring a difficult period, having now gone 19 consecutive matches without scoring. His struggles were further emphasized in the game against Sociedad, where he failed to register a single shot on goal. The lack of attacking output has raised questions about his confidence and ability to perform in crucial moments.
As United approach a critical stage of the season, Amorim will hope that any lingering frustrations between Hojlund and Dalot do not disrupt the team’s focus. The upcoming fixtures will be crucial, with a high-stakes Premier League clash against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, followed by the return leg against Real Sociedad on March 13.
With tensions rising and key games ahead, Manchester United must find a way to unify and regain momentum to keep their season on track.
