Salim Babu’s Rising Stars are gearing up for a challenging journey in the upcoming 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held in Ivory Coast this April. Kenya’s U20 national team, known as the Rising Stars, has been placed in Group C, one of the tougher groupings in the tournament. Alongside Kenya, the group includes Senegal, Zambia, and Sierra Leone, with the latter being debutants in the competition.
The Rising Stars secured their place in the prestigious tournament after a strong performance at the CECAFA U-20 Championships, where they finished as runners-up. Despite a narrow 2-1 defeat to Tanzania in the final held at KMC Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam last October, Kenya’s performance was enough to earn them a ticket to the continental stage. Tanzania, as the regional champions, also clinched a spot in the final tournament.
Head coach Salim Babu has expressed his confidence in the team’s preparation, highlighting the importance of having adequate time and resources to get ready for the competition. In an interview in January 2025, Babu acknowledged the full support of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), emphasizing that this would play a crucial role in the team’s preparations. “We are determined to have good preparations before the tournament, and we have had a meeting with the top FKF hierarchy, who have agreed to support us fully. For this, we are grateful,” Babu remarked.
Babu also spoke about the potential of his young squad, with several players showing promise for future call-ups to the senior national team, Harambee Stars. With Kenya also set to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August 2025, Babu is optimistic that many of his U-20 players will make the transition to the senior team. “This team is the future of Kenya. We don’t just have one or two players capable of making it to Harambee Stars; we have a good number. However, they must prove themselves through hard work and discipline,” he said. He urged his players to focus on their development, ensuring they do not take their spot in the U-20 team for granted, but instead work their way up through dedication.
Group C, which includes Senegal, Zambia, Kenya, and Sierra Leone, will provide tough competition for the Rising Stars. Senegal, with its rich footballing tradition, is always a formidable opponent. Zambia, known for producing strong youth talent, will also be a tough test. Sierra Leone, despite being debutants, is expected to bring fresh energy to the tournament, making this group one of the most competitive.
As preparations intensify, Babu is committed to ensuring the team is fully ready for the challenges that lie ahead. His focus on both tactical preparation and player mentality will be crucial for the Rising Stars to perform well at the tournament. With the strong backing of FKF and a growing pool of talent, there is optimism that Kenya can make a significant impact at the 2025 U-20 AFCON.
This tournament will serve as a stepping stone for many players aiming to represent Kenya at the senior level in the future, and Babu is keen to ensure that the team uses this platform to showcase their abilities and potential. The Rising Stars’ journey in Ivory Coast will not only be a test of their footballing skill but also their resilience and determination to represent Kenya on the continental stage.
