Benni McCarthy has taken charge of the Harambee Stars, Kenya’s national football team, with high expectations. His first two matches ended in a 3-3 draw against Gambia and a 2-1 loss to Gabon. While the performances showed promise, McCarthy will be eager to strengthen his squad, particularly by looking at foreign-born players eligible to represent Kenya. Here are six such players who could make a significant impact.
1. Zak Vyner
Vyner is a towering defender with a 6’2” frame, offering physicality and versatility. He can play as a center-back, right-back, or defensive midfielder. The Bristol City player agreed to play for Kenya in June 2024, but passport issues delayed his debut. He has been instrumental in Bristol City’s push for promotion, excelling in defensive duties and even captaining the side on occasions. Vyner’s presence would add much-needed depth to the Kenyan defense.
2. Linton Maina
Maina, born to a Kenyan father and German mother, is a dynamic winger currently excelling for FC Koln in the 2. Bundesliga. He leads the league in assists with ten and has scored three goals this season. Having represented Germany at youth levels, Maina remains eligible for Kenya. His ability to create chances and influence games with his attacking prowess makes him an attractive option for McCarthy.
3. Clement Mutahi Bischoff
The Danish-born Bischoff has attracted attention from major European clubs, including Brighton & Hove Albion. Though a potential move to England collapsed, the 19-year-old midfielder remains a highly rated talent. He has represented Denmark’s U19 team but could still switch to Kenya. His technical skills and vision would strengthen Kenya’s midfield options.
4. Maik Nelson Afri Akumu
Born in Berlin to a Kenyan father and an English mother, Akumu is one of Germany’s exciting young prospects. The 16-year-old winger, who has already played for Germany’s U17 team, possesses the speed and agility to trouble defenses. Standing at 1.84 meters, he provides both physical presence and technical ability. If convinced to play for Kenya, Akumu could be a long-term asset.
5. Quincy Mbugua
Another promising talent from Hertha Berlin, Mbugua is a versatile winger capable of playing as a right-back. Born in 2008, he has progressed through Hertha’s academy and signed a contract extension until 2026. Unlike Akumu, Mbugua has not yet featured for Germany’s youth national teams, making it easier for Kenya to secure his commitment. His attacking abilities could provide Harambee Stars with much-needed width and creativity.
6. Djed Spence
Spence has made a name for himself as a full-back with defensive stability and attacking contributions. He played a key role in Nottingham Forest’s promotion to the Premier League before moving to Tottenham Hotspur. Though he initially struggled at Spurs, he has since established himself as a reliable option. Eligible for Kenya through his mother, Spence could offer McCarthy a high-quality defensive reinforcement.
If McCarthy successfully integrates these players into the Harambee Stars setup, Kenya could become a competitive force in African football. With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations approaching, the inclusion of such talent could significantly boost the team’s prospects.
