The Ruiru Sports Club is set to host a thrilling showdown as top female golfers from across the region gather for the highly anticipated Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) Open. Taking place from Friday, April 4 to Sunday, April 6, the event marks a historic debut for the course in Kiambu County, as it plays host to this prestigious gathering.
This year’s event is a key part of the Golfer of the Year (GOTY) series and is poised to offer intense competition with its exciting format. The tournament will feature a 54-hole World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) event, along with a 36-hole subsidiary competition. The inclusion of the subsidiary event ensures that more golfers can experience the prestige and excitement of the KLGU Open, providing additional opportunities for players to showcase their skills and contribute to the competitive atmosphere.
Lady Captain Rodah Mukami expressed her confidence in the quality of the course, stating that the immaculate condition of the greens would ensure a fantastic experience for all participants. She added that this being the first time the event is being held at Ruiru makes it all the more special for both players and spectators. The club is eager to make this event memorable and uphold its reputation as a top destination for golfers in the region.
Among the competitors to watch is Mercy Nyanchama, a formidable player from Njoro Golf Club and a three-time reigning GOTY Champion. Nyanchama is currently tied for the top spot in the standings with 20 points alongside former Lady Captain of Eldoret Golf Club, Esther Chumo. Nyanchama is determined to hold on to her lead and is looking forward to what promises to be an exciting weekend of golf. She expressed her enthusiasm, noting that the event is not only an opportunity to enjoy the sport but also a chance to bond with fellow golfers and engage in friendly competition.
Close behind Nyanchama in the standings is Margaret Njoki from Golf Park Club, currently in third place with 18 points. Njoki, along with Chumo, is expected to put up a strong challenge for the GOTY points, adding to the intensity of the tournament. Both players are set to provide stiff competition and are eager to make their mark at the event.
The defending champion, Joyce Wanjiru of Kiambu Golf Club, will also be in action, seeking to retain her title in front of a home crowd. Wanjiru’s return to the course is eagerly anticipated, as she faces challenges not only from local contenders but also from elite amateur players from neighboring countries such as Tanzania and Uganda. With top players from East Africa converging at Ruiru, the tournament promises to be an electrifying spectacle, filled with intense competition and outstanding golf.
As the top female golfers battle for glory, the KLGU Open is expected to be a highly competitive and exciting event, drawing attention from golf enthusiasts across the region.
