The disciplined forces derby between Ulinzi Starlets and Kenya Police Bullets FC ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw at Ruaraka Grounds, Nairobi, in an intense Kenya Women’s Premier League (KWPL) clash. The encounter, played under the scorching Nairobi sun, showcased resilience, tactical discipline, and moments of brilliance from both teams.
The first half saw both teams display defensive solidity, resulting in a goalless first 45 minutes. Ulinzi Starlets, keen to maintain their unbeaten run under head coach Collins Oduor, started the second half with renewed energy. In the 55th minute, Kenya Police Bullets’ Rebecca Okwaro had a golden opportunity but narrowly missed, hitting the side netting. Moments later, Joy Oriyo had a chance to break the deadlock, but the Bullets’ backline remained resolute.
The breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Diana Wacera capitalized on a defensive lapse to put Kenya Police Bullets ahead. However, Ulinzi Starlets responded strongly, and in the 78th minute, Fasila Adhiambo “Kamama” delivered a stunning free-kick, leaving the goalkeeper helpless and leveling the score at 1-1.
Speaking after the match, Ulinzi Starlets’ head coach Collins Oduor expressed pride in his team’s performance. “It was a tough game, but we handled the pressure well. The relationship with my players has helped us build good momentum. Fasila has been training for such free kicks, and it paid off today. As for the title race, every coach wants to win, and I’m no exception—we are in it to compete.”
Notably, Ulinzi Starlets remain unbeaten under Oduor’s leadership since he took over on December 10 last year following Stephen Ochollah’s dismissal.
Kenya Police Bullets’ assistant coach Lawrence Suji, a former coach at Wazito FC and fitness coach at Kenya Police FC, was satisfied with the team’s performance. “We aimed for three points, but a draw away from home is acceptable. Our substitutes made a significant impact, changing the game in the second half. Regarding the title race, we are focused on our games rather than looking over our shoulders. The upcoming international break will help us integrate new signings.”
Fasila Adhiambo, Ulinzi Starlets’ goal scorer, reflected on the match: “We have never beaten Kenya Police Bullets, so we really wanted to win today. I feel like our defense was not strong enough, and our midfield lacked consistency. However, the international break will be a great chance to refresh.”
Kenya Police Bullets now lead the KWPL table with 29 points after 14 matches, while Ulinzi Starlets sit fourth with 23 points. The league will take a two-week international break for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers before resuming.
