Virgil van Dijk has expressed uncertainty about his future at Liverpool, stating that he has “no idea” whether he will still be with the club next season. The captain’s contract is set to expire this summer, and he has yet to sign a new deal. If he does not extend his stay, his European career at Liverpool will come to an end after the team’s recent exit from the Champions League, following a penalty shootout loss to Paris Saint-Germain. Van Dijk, alongside teammates Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, is in a similar position, with all three players’ contracts under discussion.
“I have no idea at the moment, genuinely I still have no idea,” Van Dijk said regarding his future with the club. “It is not on hold. Nothing on hold. There are 10 games to go and that is my full focus. If there is news, you guys will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it. At the moment I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face.”
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Van Dijk remains focused on the present, with the club still in contention for other trophies this season. Liverpool’s loss to PSG was a bitter disappointment, especially after taking a 1-0 advantage from the first leg. The second leg, played at Anfield, saw a much-improved performance from Liverpool, creating numerous chances but failing to capitalize on them. After the match, Van Dijk admitted the frustration of seeing the team’s efforts not lead to a positive result.
“We tried everything in our power to go through, especially in regular time,” he said. “We put ourselves in a very good position last week, winning there 1-0. Our performance today was miles better and we created a lot of opportunities. But we couldn’t capitalise.”
Now, with the Champions League behind them, Liverpool’s attention turns to the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle, set to take place this weekend. Van Dijk reflected on his previous success in the competition, having scored the decisive goal in last year’s final against Chelsea at Wembley, helping secure Liverpool’s second Carabao Cup trophy. The team, he said, is determined to fight for the remaining silverware.
“There are two big prizes we can still get,” Van Dijk remarked. “We are going to give it everything. We have to feel the disappointment tonight but from tomorrow it is about recovery. Be ready for a good one. If we bring this intensity in Wembley with our fans, then I am positive. I am always positive. But I am really looking forward to being back out there.”
As for Alexander-Arnold, there are concerns regarding an ankle injury sustained during the PSG match, which is likely to rule him out of the upcoming cup final. Initial fears of a knee injury were dispelled after scans, but the extent of the ankle injury remains to be fully determined. Additionally, Ibrahima Konaté was substituted late in the game against PSG, though it appears to be related to fatigue, and he is expected to be available for the final.
With Van Dijk’s contract situation unresolved, the pressure is mounting on Liverpool to retain their key players and continue their push for domestic glory. The team remains in a strong position in the Premier League, holding a significant 15-point lead over Arsenal, and their determination to close the season with silverware is clear. However, with important contract decisions looming, Van Dijk’s future with Liverpool remains one of the key talking points in the final stretch of the season.
