William Lenkupae has shared how a conversation with Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy influenced his decision to represent Kenya on the international stage. Despite being eligible to play for another country, Lenkupae felt a strong connection to Kenya and was convinced by McCarthy’s footballing philosophy.
Born and raised in Australia, Lenkupae qualified to play for Harambee Stars through his Kenyan parentage. Having never represented Australia at the youth level, he had the freedom to fully commit to the Kenyan national team. The 23-year-old, who can play on the left wing or as an attacking midfielder, expressed his admiration for McCarthy’s footballing vision, which made his decision easier.
“I spoke to the coach, and he put a good idea in my head. I thought this was perfect for me. I’ve always been in touch with this place,” said Lenkupae, who currently plays for Central Coast Mariners.
Lenkupae made his debut for Harambee Stars against Gambia, coming on as a second-half substitute. He marked the occasion in spectacular fashion, scoring with the last kick of the match at the Alassane Quattaraa Stadium to secure a crucial point for the team.
Reflecting on the moment, Lenkupae, who had earlier scored his first A-League goal in an F3 Derby match in November 2023 during a 3-1 victory over Newcastle Jets, described it as the proudest achievement of his career so far.
“It was an amazing achievement for me, like a dream come true. My family at home was very happy, and my family here as well. It was a great achievement and a special memory to take back to Australia.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming match, Lenkupae sees it as another opportunity to showcase his talent. He emphasized the strong connection he has always felt to Kenya and the pride he takes in playing in front of his family.
“My father’s here, my family is here, my uncle is here. I’ve always had that connection, and I knew this was going to be a great team. I’m grateful to be part of it at this moment.”
Lenkupae’s ability to play as a box-to-box midfielder and his ball-carrying skills make him a valuable asset in McCarthy’s tactical setup. His versatility aligns well with the coach’s approach, giving him a strong case for more playing time. It remains to be seen whether McCarthy will hand him a starting role against Gabon or use him as an impact substitute for a second consecutive match.
