The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has announced salary adjustments for several key parliamentary figures in Kenya, effective this month. According to a gazette notice, Moses Wetang’ula, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and Amason Kingi, the Speaker of the Senate, will see their gross salaries rise to KSh 1,208,362 from KSh 1,185,327 previously.
Similarly, Kimani Ichung’wah, the Leader of the Majority in the National Assembly, and Opiyo Wandayi, the Minority Leader, will now earn KSh 800,019. Meanwhile, Members of Parliament (MPs) have had their salaries increased to KSh 739,600.
The salary adjustments, issued through a gazette notice, come amidst discussions on public sector remuneration and the economic implications of such increments. These changes reflect ongoing efforts to align parliamentary salaries with current economic realities and are intended to support the effective functioning of legislative roles in Kenya.
The SRC’s decision to revise these salaries underscores the commission’s role in ensuring equitable and sustainable compensation within the public sector, while also addressing concerns over the disparity between different levels of parliamentary leadership and regular MPs.
