Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has emphasized that the government’s backing of Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position is rooted solely in his qualifications, not preconditions. Speaking during the 45th Logooli Cultural Festival in Mbale, Vihiga County, Mudavadi dismissed claims that support for Raila’s bid was tied to conditions stemming from his recent political actions, notably his role in defusing the Generation Z-led anti-government protests in mid-2024.
“It is not conditional,” Mudavadi asserted. “We are supporting him because he deserves it. He is a capable Kenyan with much to offer to Africa.” He underscored the need for unity and patriotism among Kenyans, calling for collective prayers for Raila’s success.
Ruto Leads Support Efforts
President William Ruto has emerged as a leading advocate for Raila’s candidacy, despite their history of political rivalry. On Christmas Eve, Ruto held talks with the incumbent AUC chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, in Kilgoris, Narok County, to discuss reforms within the AU and the upcoming election. The President reaffirmed his commitment to Raila’s campaign, describing his leadership as an asset to Africa.
Ruto has also mobilized financial and material resources to bolster Raila’s bid, signaling a strategic shift in their relationship. His active involvement includes rallying support from other African nations to ensure Raila clinches the chairmanship in February 2025.
Challenges and Opportunities
However, murmurs of discontent from sections of the public have surfaced, with some questioning the government’s motives. Critics claim the support may have political undertones linked to Raila’s recent cooperation with the administration. Mudavadi dismissed these speculations, calling for patriotism and unity in supporting a fellow Kenyan on the international stage.
“This is a serious matter. Let us not introduce conditionality,” Mudavadi said, adding that Raila’s victory would benefit not just Kenya but the entire continent. He announced plans to embark on a continent-wide campaign to rally support for Raila beginning January 2025.
The Race for AUC Chairperson
Raila Odinga faces competition from Djibouti’s Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. Mudavadi expressed optimism that Raila’s extensive experience and leadership credentials would secure him the coveted position.
“Let us pray for him; he is our brother and friend,” Mudavadi told the crowd, drawing cheers of affirmation. He emphasized that Raila’s success would be a moment of pride for Kenya and a step toward greater continental influence.
Logooli Cultural Festival and Local Matters
Mudavadi’s remarks came during the annual Logooli Cultural Festival, whose 2024 theme, Komenya M’mbugwi (the journey of the Logooli people), focused on reflecting on the past to inspire present innovations. The Prime CS attended the event as the festival’s patron, a role historically held by his late father, Moses Budamba Mudavadi.
Beyond discussing Raila’s candidacy, Mudavadi urged residents to register for the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), lamenting that Vihiga County lags in enrollment. He also highlighted the government’s plans to reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the 2027 General Election, stressing the importance of robust preparations.
A Defining Moment for Kenya
As the February 2025 AUC elections approach, the government’s backing of Raila Odinga signifies a rare moment of political alignment between President Ruto and the opposition leader. The unified effort reflects a broader vision of positioning Kenya as a leader in continental matters.
Mudavadi’s rallying call for patriotism and prayer underscores the high stakes of this international campaign, as Raila’s success could mark a pivotal moment for Kenya’s standing in Africa.
