The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather forecast warning of moderate to heavy rainfall across various regions of the country, urging citizens to stay vigilant. The advisory, which covers Monday, November 25, to Wednesday, November 27, highlights the likelihood of very heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm in some areas within 24 hours.
Affected Regions
The weather forecast indicates that the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley will be most affected. Counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot are expected to experience significant rainfall and thunderstorms.
In the North-western region, Turkana and Samburu Counties will also see persistent rains and thunderstorms during the forecast period.
Meanwhile, in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County and surrounding areas such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Counties, residents can expect morning rains, followed by afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms.
North-Eastern and South-Eastern Lowlands
The North-eastern parts of Kenya, including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo Counties, are forecasted to experience rains in the morning, with showers and thunderstorms likely in the afternoon and evening.
Similarly, the South-eastern lowlands covering Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties, along with inland parts of Tana River County, are expected to receive scattered rainfall and thunderstorms during the same period.
Coastal Areas
The coastal region, which includes Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale Counties, as well as the coastal parts of Tana River County, will have a mixed weather pattern. Showers are anticipated over a few areas on Monday and Tuesday. However, Wednesday will see sunny intervals in the morning, a chance of showers in the afternoon, and partly cloudy skies in the evening.
Rising Temperatures Across the Country
In addition to the rainfall, the Kenya Meteorological Department predicts warmer-than-usual temperatures across the country. Central and Eastern Kenya are expected to experience the most significant rise in temperatures during this period.
Advisory to the Public
The department has urged residents in the affected regions to remain alert and take precautionary measures to ensure their safety. Heavy rainfall can lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas, and may disrupt transport and infrastructure. Those residing near rivers and in flood-prone areas are advised to monitor water levels and move to safer ground if necessary.
Farmers are encouraged to take advantage of the rains while being cautious about soil erosion and waterlogging. Travelers should also be prepared for delays and challenging driving conditions due to wet and slippery roads.
Preparedness Is Key
As the rainy season intensifies, the Kenya Meteorological Department has emphasized the importance of staying updated with the latest weather information. Citizens can access regular updates through the department’s official channels, including social media and local news platforms.
This forecast serves as a timely reminder of the importance of preparedness in mitigating the potential impacts of adverse weather conditions. From urban centers like Nairobi to rural counties across the Rift Valley, it is essential to stay informed and cautious to safeguard lives and property.
