Rapper Stormzy has been banned from driving for nine months after he admitted to using his mobile phone while driving a Rolls-Royce in London. The incident, which took place in March 2024, saw the 31-year-old musician caught by an undercover police officer while driving his Rolls-Royce Wraith on Addison Road in West Kensington.
Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Owuo Junior, pleaded guilty to the offence via a letter submitted to Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court. The court heard that the rapper’s driving record was far from clean, with six points already accumulated on his licence due to previous speeding offences.
District Judge Andrew Sweet described Stormzy’s actions as “dangerous and irresponsible,” adding that using a phone while driving posed a significant risk to public safety. The court was informed that Stormzy had already been warned by the undercover officer, who approached his vehicle and said, “Get rid of your tints and get off your phone,” referring to the rapper’s illegal window tints, which had been another issue on a prior occasion.
The judge’s harsh criticism underscored the gravity of the offence, particularly given that Stormzy had been driving with illegal window tints on his Lamborghini Urus, violating UK regulations that require a minimum of 70% light transmission for front windows. The court emphasized that these actions demonstrated a disregard for the law, and his behaviour was seen as an example of how even high-profile individuals must abide by road safety regulations.
In his defence, Stormzy’s solicitor explained that the rapper accepted full responsibility for his actions, which led to the court’s decision to ban him from driving for nine months and issue a fine. The incident serves as a reminder to all drivers of the importance of staying focused on the road and adhering to traffic laws to ensure the safety of everyone on the streets.
