Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kibra have arrested a prime suspect in the murder of Sospeter Osunga, widely known as ‘Akoko the Billionaire,’ a fourth-year architecture student at Kirinyaga University. The arrest follows an extensive investigation into the brutal incident that claimed the 23-year-old’s life on November 18, 2024.
Details of the Incident
Osunga met his untimely demise in the Ayani area of Kibera after being attacked by a gang. He sustained multiple stab wounds, inflicted by sharp objects, and succumbed to his injuries outside a bar in Kibera slums. Witnesses recounted that the fatal attack occurred following a confrontation that escalated into violence.
On the fateful day, Osunga had called a longtime friend living in Kibera, expressing his intention to “treat” him. He arrived in an Audi Q3 accompanied by a man and a woman, parking outside a popular club in the slum. Known for his flamboyant lifestyle, Osunga treated the revellers present to drinks, further cementing his reputation as a generous spender.
However, the night took a tragic turn when the group decided to attend a live performance by a popular musician in a neighbouring club. A crowd began to follow Osunga, sparking a commotion. The confrontation escalated as a group of Bodaboda riders reportedly attacked Osunga and his companions with sharp objects. Osunga sustained seven stab wounds to his stomach and back, leading to his death. His two friends also suffered stab wounds but survived the ordeal.
Arrests and Investigation
DCI detectives launched a rigorous probe into the incident, arresting three individuals who provided critical intelligence leading to the apprehension of the prime suspect. Director of DCI Mohamed Amin commended the detectives’ efforts and reiterated the need for community members to uphold peace to prevent senseless loss of lives.
While the investigation has brought some answers, police are still pursuing the Bodaboda riders believed to have been involved in the mob attack. The arrested suspect is expected to be arraigned in court to face murder charges, marking a significant step toward justice for Osunga’s family.
A Life Cut Short
Osunga, a promising architecture student, was known for his ostentatious lifestyle, which he frequently showcased on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. His flashy persona earned him the nickname ‘Akoko the Billionaire,’ a title he embraced with flair. Despite his young age, he exuded confidence and generosity, often treating friends and strangers alike.
Witnesses reported that Osunga’s decision to buy drinks for revellers on the night of his death was consistent with his larger-than-life persona. His act of goodwill, however, may have drawn unwanted attention, leading to the tragic events that followed.
A Call for Justice
As investigations continue, the public and Osunga’s family await the full unraveling of the events surrounding his death. Police have recorded statements from at least five witnesses, including Osunga’s mother and a friend he was meeting that night. These accounts have been instrumental in piecing together the circumstances of the attack.
Director Mohamed Amin urged the public to work with authorities to foster safer communities. “Let us embrace peace and avoid infractions that lead to unnecessary loss of life and disruption of harmony,” he said in a statement.
A Somber Reminder
Osunga’s death serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by public altercations and mob justice. As his loved ones mourn a life tragically cut short, the case underscores the need for enhanced security measures in high-risk areas and a collective commitment to justice and peace.
The loss of ‘Akoko the Billionaire’ has left a void in the lives of those who knew him, while his vibrant persona remains etched in the memories of many.
