Suspect Dies in Police Custody at Kamukunji Police Station: An Investigation Underway

In a troubling development, a suspect has died while in police custody at Kamukunji Police Station. The incident, which occurred under unclear circumstances, has prompted an immediate investigation by both the police and independent oversight bodies.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was reportedly detained . According to preliminary reports, the individual was found unresponsive in the holding cell . Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Kamukunji Police Station’s commanding officer confirmed the death, stating that an internal review has been initiated to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the suspect’s demise. “We are deeply concerned by this incident and are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to establish the facts,” the officer said. He also assured the public that any findings of misconduct or negligence would be addressed accordingly.

In addition to the police’s internal investigation, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been alerted and is expected to conduct an independent inquiry into the matter. The IPOA, which oversees the actions of the police force in Kenya, plays a crucial role in ensuring accountability and transparency in law enforcement.

The family of the deceased, along with human rights organizations, have called for a swift and transparent investigation. They emphasize the need for accountability and justice, particularly in light of past incidents where deaths in police custody have raised concerns about police conduct and detainee treatment.

Amnesty International Kenya issued a statement urging the authorities to leave no stone unturned in their investigation. “The death of a suspect in custody is a serious issue that demands immediate and transparent investigation. It is imperative that the rights and dignity of all individuals in police custody are upheld,” the statement read.
