Suspected Drug Trafficker Who Escaped Police Dragnet in Kisii Arrested

Samuel Omondi Audi, a 36-year-old man suspected to be at the center of a major drug trafficking operation, was apprehended in Kibera, Nairobi, following a tip-off from vigilant informants. Audi, who had eluded authorities for weeks, was arrested in connection with the trafficking of a substantial haul of cannabis sativa, with an estimated street value of Ksh.3.384 million.

The arrest came after a dramatic series of events that began in the early hours of July 10, 2024. That morning, police officers on routine patrol along the Kisii-Migori highway encountered a high-speed chase involving a Nissan X-Trail, bearing registration number KDP 353U. The vehicle, which was heading towards Kisii town, was initially signaled to stop by the officers. Instead of complying, the driver accelerated, evading the police and crashing through a roadblock by running over spikes deployed to halt the vehicle.

The ensuing chase was tense. The police pursued the fleeing vehicle, which eventually skidded off the road and ended up in a ditch. As the vehicle came to a halt, its occupants scrambled out and fled into a nearby thicket, abandoning the vehicle and its illicit cargo.

Upon inspecting the abandoned Nissan X-Trail, officers discovered several sacks containing a green substance that tested positive for cannabis sativa. The total weight of the seized drugs amounted to 112.8 kilograms, marking a significant bust in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking in the region.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) promptly launched a manhunt for the suspects. Despite the initial setback of losing the fugitives in the dense thicket, the investigation continued with heightened urgency. For two weeks, detectives worked tirelessly, following leads and gathering intelligence on the whereabouts of the suspects.

The breakthrough in the case came when detectives received a credible tip-off about Samuel Omondi Audi’s location. Acting on this information, the police traced Audi to a hideout in Kibera, Nairobi. The operation to apprehend him was executed with precision, leading to his arrest and subsequent arraignment in court.

Audi’s arrest is a significant development in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Kenya. The seizure of such a large quantity of drugs underscores the scale of the trafficking operation and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in curbing this illegal trade. The arrest also highlights the crucial role of community intelligence and cooperation with law enforcement in tackling organized crime.

The police are intensifying their efforts to locate the remaining suspects and dismantle the drug trafficking network that operated behind the scenes. The case is expected to draw significant attention as it progresses through the legal system, serving as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime in the country.

The arrest of Samuel Omondi Audi and the recovery of the substantial drug cache are seen as a win for the fight against drug trafficking in Kenya. It also sends a strong message to those involved in similar criminal activities that the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with them, no matter how elusive they may seem.

As the judicial process unfolds, the public remains hopeful that this case will lead to stronger measures and increased vigilance in the fight against drug trafficking, contributing to a safer and drug-free society.
